Product Description

A heart-rending account of a Spanish village torn apart by the coming of the Civil War - A rare humanist and female voice on a war which has otherwise been colonised by political commentary and male voices. A balance to the cruelty of Orwell's Homage to Catalonia - Woolsey, a poet, was married to Gerald Brenan, one of the Bloomsbury set who with the publication of South from Grenada became the English authority on Spain - New afterword by Michael Jacobs, author of The Factory of Light and the current authority on Andalucia - Perfect backlist tie-in to the current wave of highly popular Spanish travel writing

I loved this book. I read it during the course of one rainy day and couldn't put it down. The details of the Spanish Civil War are so mind bogglingly complex, that it is refreshing to find an account of it that reduces it to the bare day to day endurance of it by ordinary people. The author comes across as a warm, spirited person. The afterword contained in the book is fascinating as it puts the author in context, and made me want to read more by and about the author, and, indeed, her husband (Gerald Brenan). Highly recommended.

Having read her husbands (Gerald Brenan) books on Spain I was intrigued to compare her literary output on their experiences of the Spanish civil war. It is written from the wars impact on them, their friends and servants as against political rhetoric or opinion. It is sensitive and becomes personal as the uncertainly and confusion of those days threatened everyone living there at the time. Another part of that complicated 'jig saw puzzle' of events.

woolsey's husband 28 April 2010
Format:Paperback
Woolsey's husband was Gerald Brennan. His original book, South from Granada, has been back in print for a year or so and is in every shop in every village you might visit in Las Alpujarras (where he lived after WW1).
