Action-packed, testosterone-fuelled - the third explosive Death's Head adventure

Product Description

Lieutenant Sven Tveskoeg is a killing machine whose DNA marks him out as less – or perhaps more – than human. He’s survived everything a hostile universe can throw at him, but it’s not luck that’s kept him alive. A lucky man wouldn’t be picked out of obscurity to serve in the army of his Emperor, OctoV, a machine-human hybrid who appears to be a teenage boy but is actually immeasurably older. Maybe Sven’s survived out of sheer bloody-mindedness (although let’s not forget his enhanced healing abilities and preternatural strength). He and his squad of auxiliaries are in Farlight, capital of the Octavian Empire, for a bit of R & R. But the emperor is missing and what begin as riots soon turn to slaughter as civil unrest erupts into civil war. And behind the double-crosses and Byzantine betrayals that threaten to topple OctoV from his throne is, of course, the U/Free, a galaxy-spanning empire with the technology of gods and the morals of schoolchildren. As anarchy takes over, Sven could choose stay low and do nothing. But when has he ever done anything that sensible?

The third in the Death's Head series featuring super soldier Sven. This is a series that has sadly gone downhill with each book, the first was okay but this follows the second into incomprehensible nonsense. I bought this at the same time as the second one and, to be honest, wouldn't have done if I had read the second one!
Anyway, this is set amongst some sort of revolution as Sven and assorted cronies set forth into a city that has fallen apart not knowing who to trust or what the big plan is. The absence of the Emperor is offering a vacuum for others to fill....I could detail more of the plot if I understood it but it's so messy it's not worth it. Sven is sort of augmented (was it the Rogue Warrior comic character that had `talking' weapons?) and supporting the Fascist Dictatorship against opponents that are equally unpleasant. But trust me, even if you understand, you won't care.
Important to read these books in order, but probably more important not to bother at all after the first one.

I quite liked the first installment, was disappointed by the second one, and didn't like the third. I almost rated it one star, but refrained because there were a few good ideas, although poorly used or even not exploited at all. The idea of a civil war breaking out and the character of General Luc are quite good. Unfortunatly, both seems to have been plucked out of thin air, with little or no explanations provided as to the whys (why the Civil War, to begin with?), and whos (who is allied against who and why?) and how come (neither Octo V nor any of his generals seem to have seen anything coming?). We don't even know what happened to Octo V. Is he "dead" or not?

As usual for me, Gunn's minimalist writting style and lame dialogues are not enough to make a good story or, rather, to mask the utter lack of a credible story. Neither is the talking Gun. Some bits, such as the last stand of one of the characters (I won't be more specific because I don't want to come up with spoilers) and the insurrection within the capital city, are not bad, but they cannot compensate for the other flaws.

As usual also, what passes for the story just drops of, making you wonder if there is going to be yet another sequel. Should this be the case, I might be reluctant to buy it...

As a fan of the first two books, I gleefully picked up this one. Prosewise its much the same as the last 2 books, - brutal just like Sven himself.

One major problem raises its ugly head. The plot - or complete lack of one. As previously Sven flails about whilst the leaders of the various factions machinate, however whilst in the previous novels the Author managed to convey both Svens place in the proceedings and at least a number of hints to what wider events were happening, in this book he fails miserably.

We have a power vacuum left by OctoV's disappearance/death - why or how is never explained, Sven carves his way through the ensuing Civil War with his usual directness. Unfortunately the author fails to tell us why, and just like Sven seems to be making it up as he goes along.

What we are left with is the shell of a novel. Sven doesn't seem to know whats happening to him, neither does the author, neither does the audience.

In short a pretty poor effort enlivened only by Sven and the Aux.
