They won over a lot of people with their first album 'Wolves', and this eagerly awaited second offering is sure to do the same. They've gone for a harder sound this time around and they're all the better for it, coming across like a blend of Mogwai and Nick Drake. They're supremely talented musicians and they prove it time and again here, key changes and shifts in time signature that would have been shaky on the debut are now done effortlessly and the arrangements are lovely throughout. Finger-picked guitars twinkle like stars at midnight, three- and four-part harmonies soar like swallows in summertime and the fiddle playing is just gorgeous.
It's an intelligent album - musically, lyrically, sonically - played with real feeling by a band who are unconcerned with current musical trends and are clearly completely in love with what they do. It's no wonder the NME didn't like it.
If it's a literate, earthy, atmospheric album you seek then look no further than this. It sounds wonderful now as the summer approaches, but, like it's predecessor, it will be best served in the darker months with a roaring fire, your favourite cardigan and a bottle of good red wine. Highly recommended.
