Jane Aiken Hodge is always brilliant, and I especially like her modern novels. This accompanied me cheaply on Kindle for my holiday. Exciting, suspenseful, and with her requisite happy ending.

HASH(0x9be490ec) out of 5 stars An average Jane Aiken Hodge 16 Sept. 2013

I have been a Hodge fan since the 70s, and was excited to read some of her later works which I had never seen in the States. This was a pleasant romance of the 70s genre ( no sex), along the lines of a Harlequin, although Hodge's writing raises it above that level. Admittedly, her contemporary stories were never my favorites, except for Strangers in Company and Last Act, , so I shouldn't have been disappointed, but I missed the political intrigue that is usually a part of her stories. All in all, it was a pleasant vacation read, and I did like the characters.

HASH(0x9bc96ed0) out of 5 stars why it's not a 5 28 April 2010

I think the ending is a little lame. However, this book has several interesting and well-written characters, a nice suspenseful plot, and isn't totally fluff. It's a good book to curl up to on a rainy day (which is what I did).

HASH(0x9bc1c084) out of 5 stars An independent lady needs help in her final months from our heroine 21 May 2014

This was a shorter story by Jane Aiken Hodge. I found it to be an intimate look at a proud woman and how she is coping with encroaching death with the help of relative strangers. Our heroine takes the nursing job in a moment of desperation and finds herself out in the countryside, quite alone and responsible for the old woman. I found this to be suspenseful. I would have graded it with a 4 except it was lesser than the usual Hodge, especially since "The Winding Stair" takes a big 5.
