Product Description

Deathhammer is the eighth foray in to the studio for Dutch death metal legends Asphyx and comes two years after their comeback album Death...The Brutal Way. It's another death metal tour de force from the band in a year that has seen them clock up a quarter of a century in the industry.

Another of the original pioneers of the early nineties makes a welcome return in 2012 with Deathhammer. A word more than nearly as brutal as it sounds, and is especially so in this case, since this album has such a really cool old school feel about it; and in my opinion a route that more of the ol' ruff would do themselves plenty of good to start going down again..... Not that Asphyx are ever going to change their bed rock of doom death metal, experiment or comply to any kind of modern trend. Deathhammer, is surprisingly but refreshingly revitalizing, as the atmosphere and production is clear but persists a dark (but not polished) doomy stamp all over it. This is a 100% focused Asphyx and no less, in-which this is once again, a step up from their predecessing album and is already in my opinion within the top ranks of their discography and recent death metal.

"Into the timewastes" is a cracking start to the album as is "Deathhammer," (the title track) which permit a fairly hefty robust continuation from that. While "Minefield" is a long doom of patronage in times of old, this succeeds into Track 4, titled "Of days when blades turned blunt"- which is of pure extravaganza in riffage on steroids, and that which remains true to quality extreme music. Other more speedy numbers such as that of "Reign of the brute" are also terrific; in-fact, this whole album is excellent as it does not contain one single- underperforming track. The album is a little short in length compared to modern day capacities, but my feeling on the matter is:- why fill a disc with anything less than stellar?! with a short two disc set here as well as the album, there is ample material to get through Just have another listen to "Death the brutal way" and "Bestial vomit."

Alright then, lets get this over with...

Very heavy, very aggressive Death with a hint of doom. Great abrasive sound/production and good songwriting. One of the extreme metal highlights of 2012. KNEEL! You dogs...

Hope for the Old School 16 Mar. 2012

Asphyx is at it again. Staying true to their roots, they don't disappoint. If you like old school, raw, gritty, in your face Death Metal, then you'll need to add this to your collection. I also think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you see that this was released in 2012. Proof, there's still hope for the old school. Keep it metal.

This is true death metal..you bastards !! 4 Mar. 2012

wow...Obituary has a lot of catching up to do. Asphyx are ferociously heavy. I like this one even more than Death The Brutal Way..the songs are more memorable and catchy. Martin Van Drunen is an absolute monster. The latest releases from Asphyx and Hail of Bullets are simply awesome. Old school death metal..the brutal way !

Awesome oldschool Death Metal 5 Feb. 2013
By Ralf M. Leonhardt - Published on Amazon.com

A few weeks ago, I was listening into one of these modern technical Death Metal CDs, a style that I usually like, but somehow I felt something was missing. The musicianship was outstanding, the technical elements partly even breathtaking, the production was great, but somehow I could not get myself being excited. Still wondering why, I changed the CD and put this new release from Asphyx into the player. I immediately realized what had been missing in the first CD. The music had been nicely played by talented musicians, musically there had been nothing obviously wrong with the material, but the songs had simply not rocked at all. They had completely lacked the power and the energy and the intensity of convincing metal.

And how different is Asphyx' Deathhammer. The songs are extremely oldschool - if you like albums like Entombed's old hit Left Hand Path you will love this one as well. The riffs are brutal, have more speed and aggression than the songs on their last release (Death The Brutal Way from 2009), and Martin van Drunen shows once more that he is one of the best, and maybe THE best, Death Metal vocalist around. If you liked Pestilence's "Consuming Impulse" and you could never adjust to Patrick Mameli's vocal style or you had problems with the more technical direction the music of the band took, Asphyx' Deathhammer almost sounds like a "back to the roots" album to the great days of the early Pestilence. The tracks have an immense power, roll like a bulldozer over the audience, and contain an enormous forward momentum. I was blown away by this CD. I highly recommend it to oldschool Death Metal fans.

From the moment this release starts to the moment the CD ends, Deathhammer is the best death metal release so far in 2012, and I think it may very well carry that title right through the year. I dont see how this can be topped. Like any asphyx release, you know what to expect, the killer vocals, the bad ass riffs, and the memorable songs. This is a must have.
