Hello all : For those of you who have yet to read this book I would definitively recommend it. The story revolves around the arrival of outsiders into Caelogy Hall in Turbury a place where tragedy meant death many years before. The newcomers are watched by the village elders who do not approve but the hiring of a local tradesman who erects the bell in the outdoor belfry despite his own misgivings and the hostility of the new tenants frightened by their secrets sets events in motion. The sounding of the deathbell jars the hearing of those who hear it and for the vulnerable this often means damage to the ears and even death as the frequency of the sound rather than its noise causes horrible agony. Many of the deathbell's surviving victims lose their senses with madness and hallucinations of past events near the deathbell frequently observed with others simply becoming enraged turning to murder or worse. The town slowly loses the fight to stop the deathbell sounding and as the deathtoll rises, the action speeds up to a satisfying conclusion in which events in Tibet are finally uncovered to explain the ringing of the deathbell. This is well-worth 4 or 5 hours of your time and is recommended to all Guy N Smith fans and beyond.
