Book Description

Carole had never had such a bad hair day! The last thing she expected when she went for a trim at ‘Connie’s Clip Joint’ was to find the body of Kyra, Connie’s assistant, in the back room, strangled. Immediately involving her friend and neighbour Jude, Carole becomes determined to investigate the death. Meanwhile Kyra’s boyfriend Nathan Locke has vanished. His family, an eccentric, controlling bunch don’t seem overly concerned. Instead they are bizarrely obsessed with a family board game which seems to provide a host of clues as to Nathan’s whereabouts. Can Carole and Jude unravel the clues and discover the truth before someone is falsely accused, or before the killer makes a second deadly move? And how many haircuts can a middle-aged sleuth have before people become suspicious?!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jude and Carol to the rescue once again! 1 Dec 2007
By Laura D
Format:Hardcover
Here we are with another instalment of the Carole and Jude adventures. These two ladies while away their "quiet" retirement on the south coast of England solving murder mysteries.

I think the great strength of this series is the interaction between the stuffy, formal, ex civil servant Carole and the free spirited, former model, amongst other things, Jude. They make quite a team.

Here with another beautifully crafted adventure lifting the lid on the hair and beauty salon world. And what a wonderful, yet eccentric range of characters we meet: people like The Locke family, who seem to live in a role playing game of their own design, a retired songwriter and his bossy wife and the hairdressers themselves. Just who would have a motive to murder the young assistant?

As usual Carole and Jude have to use their own skills and talents to solve the mystery. There are lots of lovely interactions with suspects. Jude is at her flirtatious best and Carole is a no nonsense as ever.

A great way to while away a winter evening enjoying the gentle yet sharp humour of Simon Brett.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tip Top Mystery 4 Jan 2008
By Wendy Jones TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I must like the Fethering Mysteries as I have just read 2 in a week. I was not disaapointed with this latest offering from the pen of Simon Brett. In these mysteries Brett has hit just the right touch between a mystery and the story of the lives of the regulars involved in the Plot. We get to know just a little bit more about Jude and Carole enough to tantalise but not to give too mcuh away that it can't be carried on into the next book. The mystery itself is top notch with a fair few people who could quite easily have carried out the murder. Jude and Carole carry on doggedly to find out who the murderer is and when it is revealed I was stunned. I didn't suspect them for a minute. I am already looking forward to the next one which unfortunately does not come out until March 2008. I can't wait especially as I want to know about Carole's grandchild!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Short Back and Sides 31 Jan 2009
By Joanne D'Arcy TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is the first Simon Brett and Fethering Mystery that I have read. Although I have come into the series a few books in, it did not stop my enjoyment of this novel and I did not feel completely ignorant of the main characters backgrounds. I will now seek out the previous books and read them in the correct order.

The story involves Carole and Jude two local women, who are neighbours and obviously have a nose and a passion for solving mysteries especially murders. Carole is present in Connie's Clip Joint when the body of the junior, Kyra is found in the back room, and the mystery behind her death and the disappearance of her boyfriend, Nathan intrigue Carole and Jude enough to investigate all possible avenues for the crime and ultimately lead to the discovery of the murderer. (I had worked it out fairly early on, but was intrigued to see how they would get there).

Brett uses many red herrings and blind alleys effectively to take the reader down as we try and work out who was involved in this death. Mim and Wally who epitomises a married couple with a wife firmly in charge; Martin and Connie who are divorced and quite vociferous in their dislike of each other and Theo the wonderfully camp colleague of Connie's who really just has to be read about to be believed. Then there is the 'Locke' family who provide interesting reading and could probably fill a whole book with their strange family ways. All good likeable (and dislikeable) characters that you could believe in as a reader.

All these twists and turns make for a good comfortable read, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book especially as I recognised lots of the locality as it is not far from me, always gives a book a bit more life. Heartily recommended and much better than Agatha Raisin.

4.0 out of 5 stars First Fethering Mystery for me... 5 Feb 2013
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is the first of Simon Brett's Fethering Mysteries that I have read and I enjoyed it very much. I will look out for others and I liked the way that you often get the start of another book at the close of the paperback.
I enjoyed reading about the Locke family and their alternative world and I knew they would come a cropper. I also thought Carole an ex Civil Servant was nicely described and being a retired CE myself I could follow some of her logic! I also had to chuckle at her idea of a long car journey and why would you want or need to stop off for food because that was my own experience when a passenger and my father was driving. I had not thought of that for many years but it made me laugh. Jude is sappy but spot on with her thoughts and investigations into the murder and I again laughed at the mention of The Marple Twins. It did keep me guessing and I went for all the red herrings so it was a surprise to find out who the murderer was. Kim and Wally a lovely old couple and you could transfer their behaviour to many nationalities and I've known quite a few old couples just like them. Simon Brett does add comedy and asides and what Carole thought was lovely in her dealings particularly with Rowley Locke.
