A significant new talent (Sunday Times )

Product Description

At 5.15 p.m. Harvey Ellis was trapped - stranded in a line of eight cars by a blizzard on a Norfolk coast road.

At 8.15 p.m. Harvey Ellis was dead - viciously stabbed at the wheel of his truck.

And his killer has achieved the impossible: striking without being seen, and without leaving a single footprint in the snow . . .

For DI Peter Shaw and DS George Valentine it's only the start of an infuriating investigation. The crime scene is melting, the murderer has vanished, the witnesses are dropping like flies. And the body count is on the rise . . .

Warrants a read 25 May 2009
By Phil Robertshaw VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I approached Death Wore White having only read one other Jim Kelly book - The Water Clock. That was a gentle but enjoyable thriller, and the description of this one made it hard to resist trying.

Preconceptions must be got out of the way first. The cover implies that this is a modern version of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None - or at least that was my interpretation of it. Not quite - the plot doesn't all take place at the scene of the crime. This is a standard police procedural with a detective double act. These detectives have a history which lingers in the background - DI Peter Shaw's late father also worked with his current colleague, DS Valentine. The case that disgraced them and left Valentine demoted forms a subplot to what is already quite a complex tale.

Jim Kelly manages to spin a lot of different elements into a story that needs a lot of attention to follow, but persevere with it, because it's a pretty good effort. The story takes several turns and is not at all predictable, which certainly keeps you reading to find out where it's all going. In the end, it's a satisfying, if slightly contrived denouement.

If you're already a fan of Jim Kelly's books, you won't need any further convincing to read this one. If you've never tried him before, Death Wore White is definitely worth starting with.

A compelling read. 12 Jan 2009
By Lizzie Hayes TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
'At 5pm on a freezing February evening, Sarah Baker-Sibley is driving on a Norfolk coast road to collect her daughter from school at 5.30. To avoid traffic she takes her usual back road route, but tonight it let's her down, as an AA diversion sign turns her off the normal route. When the vehicle in the front comes to a stop owing to a fallen tree, she sees in her rear view mirror that there are several cars behind her. By now the snow is falling thick and fast and there is no way anyone can reverse, so Sarah along with seven other vehicles is trapped.

Although, this mystery is set outside there is an element of `locked Room' syndrome, as the driver of one of the vehicles is found to be dead, but there are no footprints in the snow either to or from his vehicle. As the police investigate the murder, the secrets of the other drivers are slowly revealed. Then another body is found which although not in the trapped convoy is close enough for the police to suspect a link.

The investigating officers are DI Peter Shaw and DS George Valentine. The latter had previously worked with Peter's father and there is still a shadow hanging over him, a shadow Peter would like to have explained. Thus
the relationship between them is uneasy.

There are many layers to this ingenious tale, and some great clues which had me completely foxed. In all I found the book a compelling read. One oddity I found was some of the descriptions -` his eyes were tap water
blue'. I also couldn't quite get with `her lipstick red car' Pillar box red I could understand, but lipstick is a number of different shades, so it didn't really give me a description.

I understand that it is the first in a new series, I will be looking out for the next one. Recommended.

Having never read a book by this Author before I was surprised how good this was. The plot never let up, the descriptions so vivid you could easily imagine youself being there and the only thing I found annoying was the examples used in describing some things...........the comparison to other things/colours/images were off putting at times. However, having said that I guess they added to the atmosphere of the book and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to other crime readers.

This is good ........ very, very good.....
I am not sure why the rear cover refers to Jim Kelly as a "significant new talent" as he has written a number of very good books already and this is no exception. Read more
