4.0 out of 5 stars Great Americana Discovery 23 Oct 2009
Format:Audio CD
2009's best album comes courtesy of the improbably-named Wisconsin-based singer/songwriter.
The host of names associated with this album is enough to raise a few eyebrows in musical circles,
including producer Joe Chiccarelli and members of The Racounteurs, but it's Cory Chisel's songs
that shine through. From the rousing opener "Born Again", which uses a spooky organ riff as it's
main motif, to the haunting closer "Mockingbird", the 11 tracks on offer cover everything from rock
to blues to jazz to soul to Americana, with no shortage of memorable hooks that the finest classic
pop acts would kill for. Throughout the album, Chisel is ably assisted by backing singer/organist
Adriel Harris and the combination of their two voices provides some of the albums high points;
the coda to the mesmerizing "Curious Thing" being a great example, voices weaving in an out of a
bluesy guitar riff. As if that wasn't enough, "My Heart Would Be There" makes a late bid for the
song of the year, combining a terrific vocal from Chisel with some atmospheric guitar and Adriel
Harris again providing suitably ghostly backing. I don't write too many reviews on Amazon,
but I discovered this album completely by chance while surfing the net and rate it as one of my
discoveries of the decade, alongside Ryan Bingham. Hopefully this will spur more listeners to discover
a wonderful secret.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new familiar friend? 7 Oct 2009
By Caitlin
Format:Audio CD
I'll come clean and admit I bought this because it's partly produced by Brendan Benson and Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler play on it(although only 1 track has all 3 together)I'm still at the stage of getting to know everything on it but it's very pleasant(which sounds like damning with faint praise but is not meant to be)

It's very much in the same ball-park as Benson's solo work but without Benson's slightly worrying tendency to overuse the rhyming dictionary(some-one pointed that out to me and it's now stuck in my head.) The opening track Born Again is co-written with Benson and is a wonderful, rollicking country-gospel tinged affair. It's very strong and on first listen the subsequent tracks initially suffered but repeated listening is showing hidden depths. There are interesting lyrical and musical twists, songs go off in unexpected directions. Definitely worth checking out, and dare I say it, I'm liking it more than Benson's Old Familiar Friend, which was just a little too familiar and a little underwhelming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime indie rock with a tinge of folk waiting for you here 30 Jun 2010
By Ms. Mopsy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
There is something in these songs by Cory Chisel that draws out a rather surprising emotional response from me. I didn't expect to find my musical nirvana when I downloaded this album, but yep, I was entranced. It's always a joy to find something new and exciting in the music kingdom these days. Rolling Stone magazine had some pretty fantastic things to say about this group.

Born Again and Angel of Mine are my favorite tracks, but each and every one is a gem. The songwriting and musicianship are truly impressive. And the man can SING! The lyrics are sophisticated, but keep close to the world Mr. Chisel inhabits. We are lucky to get to visit that world.

His first EP, Cabin Ghosts, isn't quite as polished but is an excellent introduction to the band. I can't wait for more!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ordering a "spare" 26 Jan 2012

If a CD is truly amazing then I'm one of those wingnuts that will actually purchase a backup CD just incase something happens to the first purchase. This is one of those CDs! Why on earth this music is not blowing up the airwaves yet is beyond me, but I am truly hooked.
Like another reviewer said before me I don't tend to analyze my choices in music too deeply, I just know what I like. Any song that can grab me and make me feel something works for me, and this ENTIRE CD is full of songs like that. Favorites are "Tennessee", "My Heart Would Be There", and of course "Born Again". I sure hope this group tours the south soon, would love to see them play live!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adriel Harris sings backup 22 Dec 2011
By Dougster - Published on Amazon.com
I'm writing this review actually in advance of purchase (I've listened via streaming thus far). Actually what introduced me to CC and WS is his backup vocalist Adriel Harris. I did a search for her after hearing her on a collaborative album with her husband Noah....a great listen. Usually, I'm a bit biased, preferring male vocalists over female, but she has an AMAZING voice and Cory knows what he's doing incorporating her so regularly in his songs. Although it would appear she doesn't crave the spotlight, in case Cory or Adriel reads this...........Adriel please do a solo album or a few lead vocal tracks on a next album with Cory! Anyways, with that disclaimer out of the way, fantastic album that is dripping with musical excellence!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cory Chisel is my latest--albeit belated--discovery . . . . 22 April 2011
By Layla Flannery - Published on Amazon.com

A friend recently recommended Cory Chisel, and I am so grateful. Cory is a local and amazing talent. His voice phenomenal and his music stirring. If you're looking for something a little different, definitely give this musician a try. Gripping combination of folk & blues is how I would best describe. I don't overly analyze my music, just know what I like--and this is good music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cory Chisel should be a star! 23 Mar 2011
By TSC - Published on Amazon.com

This is a great CD from a young artist and his band. Cory Chisel can write and sing slow, folk-type, songs and those songs which get you up and dancing hard and fast. I have had the great pleasure of seeing CC & the Wandering Sons a couple of times live and look forward to both seeing him again and listening to his new releases. I just hope that, with the economy the way it is, that this young man keeps at his art and delivers to us more music of this sort. He has a distinctive and refreshing sound and, of my about 1,000 CD's, his music (this CD and Cabin Ghosts) gets more than its share of play on my stereo. On this CD, I especially love: Born Again, Calm Down, Angel of Mine, So Wrong For Me and What Do You Need (my favorite and incredible live!). The album has no 'throw away' songs, something I find to be rare. The songs are quite varied; running the gamut from high energy songs to Cory Chisel's slow, beautifully constructed, ballads. My strong suggestion; Buy this CD and Cabin Ghosts.
