Synopsis
Charles Bronson stars in a genre-defining vigilante thriller that made him a household name. A fatal sexual assault on his wife and daughter leads mild-mannered architect Paul Kersey (Bronson) to rethink the justice system in his own terms when he discovers the police to be ineffectual, bureaucratic slackers. He then starts to single-handedly reduce New York's crime rate by murdering every thug, scumbag, and no goodnik he lays eyes on. The film, despite its use of graphic violence as entertainment, was hailed as a socially complex and engaging movie that shocked audiences across the country. Subsequently, Bronson filmed a long series of films as Kersey that were heavier on violence than substance. However, DEATH WISH is a classic American film whose themes and style have been imitated by filmmakers all over the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now I'm older I have a different perspective, 23 April 2007
I remember some time ago (late nineteen-eighties perhaps) when I was certainly too young in the eyes of the censors to be watching such material that there was a season of Charles Bronson films on television and I loved it. I found most of the films exciting and slightly disturbing at the time. Now I have a more mature view I find myself when watching this film torn between the arguments presented for and against the acts of vigilantes.
This is a great film and with such a brutal beginning even someone who belives wholeheartedly in the rule of law would feel sympathy for the motives of Paul Kersey, the vigilante portrayed here, especially when set against the apparent apathy of the law (and his son-in-law) for his suffering.
Potential spoiler in this paragraph: It is interesting that Paul Kersey never gets revenge on those who caused his suffering and doesn't seem to seek it directly. He seems to be getting his revenge by killing other criminals and I can't help but feel that he persists with his generalised vendetta against criminals only because he is unable to exercise true vengence. We see him adjust his ideals in his job and maybe this is the clue to his motive. Perhaps he sees beyond his own suffering and mourns the greater loss of an ideal where crime does not pay.
I found the transfer to DVD a little flawed because of the jerkiness of the motion, which is most noticeable near the beginning. This must be due to different frame rates but I can't understand the reason for it when other films seem, to my eyes, to have transferred without such faults. Either the effect is variable and improves through the film or you just get used to it because by the end I was no longer aware of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping but underated, 20 Oct 2007
By D Skilton (east sussex uk) - See all my reviews
Due to this films rubbish sequels(each one worse than the last)critics seem to tarnish it with the same brush. If your new to this film ignore the critics and go buy. Its the gripping and sometimes disturbing story of Paul Kersey who turns vigilante after his wife is killed and his daughter raped by low life scum who break into his house. This is one of the first films(if not the first)of its kind and also one of the most underated movies of the seventies. Even though it does seem a little dated now. Charles Bronson is on top form as Kersey. Also to my knowledge this is the first time the film is available in its uncut version on either dvd or video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic!, 13 Oct 2007

Michael Winner's masterpiece has aged well. Aside from being an excellent action film, it also questions the morality of vigilante behaviour and asks whether it merely leads to anarchy. Personally I am all for it though. A couple of weeks ago I was browsing in a branch of a major high-street discount bookstore, when a masked gunman entered and demanded the money from the till. Fortunately the quick thinking of a maverick workman foiled the crime. He removed a tool from his box and hurled it across the room, knocking the gunman clean out. If you ask me, his heroic behaviour should be an example to us all- in a day when most people are too scared to stand up for what is right. If more of us were willing to throw a spanner in 'The Works' when a crime is in progress, the world would be a safer place.
