Some break-away Russians not happy with the demise of the Soviet hire a mercenary to hijack a nuke and transport it. Right-thinking governments decide this is a no-no. Cue intelligence high-up Patrick Stewart putting together an international team to thwart the terrorists, led by a cocky, arrogant, sexist and vaguely misogynistic Pierce Brosnan. Throw in post-Baywatch Alexandra Paul for some eye-candy and muse for Brosnans characters sexism/misogyny and base it around an Alastair MacLean plot and Bob's your uncle; an enjoyable knock-about thriller that works if you switch your mind off from a sense of realism and watch it for what it is; the film of the book - in this case, a thriller novel.

In the US this movie is called "Detonator." There's a sequel that isn't quite as compelling, Detonator 2, which features Brosnan and Paul (titled "Night Watch" in some regions). If you have a Region 1 compatible player, there's a boxed set of both movies available.

The sequel is not to be confused with the first movie of the Russian supernatural trilogy, also entitled Night Watch.

Okay then having just watched 'Death Train' last night on DVD, I'll admit it's not a bad film. In fact it is rather good for most of it's running time. Some other reviewers have said it is a bit slow and it is a little bit when it comes to most hijacking films that are released today. However this gives the film's plotline a slightly more grittier approach.

The film sees Pierce Brosnan as United Nations Agent Michael Graham who is called upon by his boss Malcolm Phillpott, played by Patrick Stewart, when a train is hijacked by terrorrists led by Alex Tierney (Ted Levine). Michael is then sent with a team (including Baywatch's very own Alexandra Paul as Sabrina Carver) to sort the situation out. However as things thicken Michael,Phillpott and Sabrina discover theres a lot to this than meets the eye......

Despite the fact that it looks like it was made for TV (wheather it was I don't know) and that in the second half the pace of the plot goes almost TOO fast for you to keep up, it's still a good yarn. Rarely shown on TV and even rarer to find in DVD shops so if you find it somewhere, get it because it is worth checking out at least once. There was at least one sequel called 'Night Watch' but that is no where near as good. This one though is no better or worse than an average James Bond film. Worth a try even if the second half does have faults. 8/10.

Plot

in death train pierce brosnan plays a special forces soldier called Mike Graham, he is tasked by malcolm philpot (patrick stewart) in stopping a madman (ted levine) on a train with a nuclear bomb

DVD

this dvd is not bad quality, its 4:3 aspect ratio with stereo sound, one big problem is all the russian speaking parts of the film are supposed to have subtitles, these are missing from the dvd and not hardcoded on the video, the VHS version has them so this is just a balls up.

if you have knowledge of such things it is possible to make your own subtitle track and watch it back on pc (you could even backup your own dvd and insert the subtitles) a lot of work for not much gain though.

No, sorry. Didn't like it. It really hasn't aged well, production values felt a bit like a public announcement video from the early 80s. Brosnan and Paul's battle of sexes wasn't convincing and again seemed more of the early 80s than late 90s. Clarke evoked cringes from around our lil home cinema with each stilted line and what on earth (or any planet) was Lee doing? - a life-sized cut-out may have worked out better; his last speech to video is horrifying for all the wrong reasons.

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! The film could most easily described as a combination of "Atomic Train" and "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three". Anyone who liked either of those movies will absolutely like this.
