Product Description

Product Description

The police are called to a sadistic attack in Spigg’s Wood in the quiet Essex countryside. Meg Rusher, mother of three, and erstwhile kickboxing champion, has shot and wounded one man and seriously injured another. In self-defence, she claims. The men and the evidence at the scene contradict this. DI Hal Hedley and his team investigate, but their discoveries lead to injustice and death.

First in the Elversford Mysteries set in Essex. The sequel, "Death in Flitbury marshes" is now available for download. Also by the author: Wargeld & Other Stories, a collection of short stories, some crime, some lighter hearted.

I started this book with the intention of only reading a few pages, just to set the story, but several pages later I was hooked and couldn't stop. I thought I had the ending worked out, but with the excitement in the final 25% of the book I realised things were sitting on a knife edge with several potential endings possible. I just couldn't work out which way things were going to go which kept the tension right up until the end. I can't wait for the next book from this author and would recommend it to everyone who likes excitement and tension in their reading. :)

I got this as a freebie, but wasn't sure I'd like it. It turned out to be a lot more than I was expecting and I can honestly say it's one of the best thrillers I've read, definitely as a freebie, and probably ever! It was fast-paced and had elements of a psychological thriller, police procedural, and legal all rolled into one.

The author has created very likable, identifiable characters and I liked the way the story was recapped quickly every now and then as part of the police debriefing sessions - I admit I sometimes have trouble remembering character names!

I thought the courtroom drama was very well played out - the story could have lost some momentum there, but instead became absolutely gripping and thought-provoking with the "what is reasonable force?" debate.

I read 90% in one day, and then finished it off as soon as I woke up the next day! I highly recommend this book and will be looking out for more by this author. Be warned, however, that the book gets quite violent towards the end, in a way that some may find disturbing.

I'd also like to add that I didn't notice the usual typos/bad grammar that seem to come hand-in-hand with kindle freebies (well, not many, anyway - but I may have been engrossed in the story!).

Death in Spiggs Wood 22 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A gripping tale.A grim start with a horendous crime. An innocent victim who reports the crime rapidly becomes a suspect and is steamrollered by the legal system. The plot unfolds with many twists and turns that kept me guessing. Well crafted characters evolve throughout the story and as an Essex dweller for most of my life the scenes of the action are either recogniseable or typical of rural Essex.
A great read. More please!

Alas I couldn't finish it
Unfortunately, this story was spoiled for me by the non stop repetition.

I'm glad it was free when I downloaded it as I simply couldn't finish the book. Read more

Gripping page-turner
This story is gripping from the first. It doesn't rely on violence to carry the story but the suspence is created by the police proceedural. Read more

engrossing book!
I loved this story. The title made me think the book was going to be something of a "Midsomer Murders" read, but nothing could be further from the truth. Read more

Unreadable
This is the only book from Kindle that I have given up on. The premise of a woman accused of an attack on a man in a wood is sound enough but the book is repetitive and goes over... Read more
