Product Description

Product Description

I wasn t singing on my way to work anymore, but I hadn t had time to notice. With a passion for making a difference to the lives of the most vulnerable people in society, Sue Miller struggles to keep her life and family together through the most terrible personal tragedies. Having finally achieved her goal, she also finds that she must battle against a culture of bureaucracy and cost-cutting. Sometimes funny, often sad but always frank and honest, 'Death of a Social Worker' allows a jargon-free glimpse into the realities of Sue s own life and of social work from a very unique and personal perspective. Her moving story is both inspiring and, at times, heartbreaking.

About the Author

Sue Miller gained a BSc (Hons) in Psychology as a mature student in 1992, followed by a professional qualification in social work (DipSW), in 1995 and a Post-graduate Diploma in Social Work in 1996. Sue is registered to practice as a child-care social worker and works in a statutory setting within the Department of Health and Social Care of the Local Authority. Aged 54, Sue continues to live in the small village of her childhood in the North-West of England with husband, Martin. Sue has 2 sisters, 3 children and 4 grandchildren; all live locally.

A Must Read Book 2 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback
What a fantastic and compelling book, excellently written. Sue manages to take you through her trials and tribulations both personally and professionally. This book in particular when we look at current media coverage of Social Workers makes you think ( Not scaremonger) into how as a professional child care practioner your voice must be heard and you must challenge not just your own but others views and decisions.
This book is a must for all practioners new and experienced.
Well written and honest, Sue Miller seems to have "families first" at the forefront of her practice which is how it should be. Good on you Sue.

what a brilliant book 24 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback
Sue Miller has hit the jackpot with this fascinating and entertaining book. I have enjoyed reading every page and just could not put it down. Whether interested in child-care social work or not, it is a fantastic read. Sue Miller tells of her own life and the influences upon her choice of career, the many pitfalls along the way and the realities of this profession. It is a good antedote to all the bad press that social workers tend to attract and puts the 'blame' for the failings of the system firmly where it belongs
