Product Description

1802. An ancient Scottish university is wracked by murder. A vindictive professor, an uncouth student, and a man seeking ministry lie dead, but who wanted to kill them? Charles Murray, a student with enough problems of his own, is drawn into the mystery, where neither innocuous accidents nor good friends are all they seem.

Death in a Scarlet Gown is first in the Murray of Letho series, and is also available in paperback from Amazon.com.

History and Mystery 31 July 2011
By Ignite TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the first book in what I hope will be a long series. The young man Charles Murray has a serious falling out with his father over his future. Young Charles is a natural academic but his father wants him to take his place in society and help with running the family's estates. We meet with characters both pleasant and unpleasant and of course with murder most foul. The writing is superb and there's enough action to keep us on the edge of our seats, both with the progress of investigation of the mysterious deaths and with Murray's fight to stay in St Andrew's to take his MA.

Murray is a really 3 dimensional character, with his own likes, dislikes and prejudices etc. I hope to read much more about him!

Quality writing 29 Jun 2011

I downloaded this book on a whim because it was cheap. I wasn't expecting much but have been stunned by the quality of the writing. This is an author to watch, a real talent. This is a satisfying mystery set in early nineteenth century St Andrews, Scotland. I loved the author's turn of phrase; here are a couple of examples "..heavy jowls nestled in his high collar like a toad in mud. He swept through the crowd like a frigate through a fishing fleet..", and in describing the music at an evening reception "..a pair of violins unhappily married and fallen on bad times."

I really enjoyed reading this. There is plenty of mystery to exercise the mind, good characterisation, a well-constructed story and tragedy. I do hope that this author will soon make more of her books available on the kindle.

I loved this. Not only does it have rich, satisfying writing with serious characters, but also - speaking as a reader from Scotland and who went to St.Andrews for uni - a real feel for time and place, allowing you to sink into the historical world of those characters without that niggling feeling that some jarring anachronism will break the flow. This author has done her homework.
