Product Description

Product Description

From the creators of Godspeed: The Kurt Cobain Graphic and Eminem: In My Skin comes an explosive new graphic novel, tracing the events leading up to the death of one of modern music's most charismatic performers. Tupac: One Nation Under a Gun chronicles the triumphs and tragedies of the notorious hip-hop superstar Tupac Shakur, the figurehead of a musical movement that came to define black culture in America and beyond. Exploring the recesses of a racist, damaged country, the book takes the reader on a self-destructive ride through the violence and corruption and greed of Los Angeles. The marriage of Barnaby Legg and Jim McCarthy's incendiary writing with Flameboy's potent, gritty visuals produces a new perspective on the controversial events surrounding the rise of Death Row Records, the brutality of street gang warfare and murder. From the hazy skies of Los Angeles to the back streets of New York, this tells the story of a unique talent cut down at just 25 years of age.

TUPAC SHAKUR: A LIFE ****
Jim McCarthy, Barnaby Legg, Flameboy
Omnibus £10.95
ISBN: 1844497275
Iconic Rap legend gets graphic novel treatment
In the last few years Barnaby Legg, Jim McCarthy and artist Flameboy have carved out a niche with graphic novel lives of Kurt Cobain and Eminem. This visual medium is ideally suited to the subject, allowing career insights to be mixed with almost religiously iconic images we project onto our musical heroes. This third outing examines the fascinating life and death of rap star Tupac. Rather than straight ahead biography the writers choose to reveal the artist through the black experience of racism, drive-by shootings and history. Thus the murder of Martin Luther King, the patricide of Marvin Gaye and the death of Tupac himself are part of an ongoing history of violence that doesn't just bury black men but plants a seed to inspire future generations.
As seeds go, the life of Tupac was one of artistic sensitivity and success that saw him become a successful actor, a huge star and also buy into the rage, excess, violence and swagger of the rap lifestyle. Indeed, he was the first artist to have a number one album while in prison - the ultimate Rap career move. Drawn with cinematic panache by Flameboy, this is a fascinating and educational read. So much has been written about Tupac, I was doubtful if this graphic novel could offer me any fresh insights.

To be honest, 'Death Rap' didn't really give me the full Tupac life story (it isn't a detailed biography). However, it does succeed in offering a dramatic and highly unique insight into Shakur's world, providing compelling and memorable snap shots of the defining moments of his life...and it doesn't hold anything back.

This is the third book by Flameboy, McCarthy and Legg, and Flameboy's artwork is again exceptional. His powerful imagery manages to portray a depth of honesty, emotion and raw energy rarely found in a graphic novel.

Thug Life isn't an easy read, but it's a good one. Highly recommended.

Hip-Hop Comic Book 12 Nov 2007
By Charity Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book was a gift and much to my surprise it was extremely interesting. If you are a fan of comic books and hip-hop you'll love this as it incorporates history as well as surmised details leading up to Tupac's tragic death. The book even includes brief stories and illustrations about Malcolm X and Marvin Gaye's last days. If you like comics and love Tupac, this book is a must have.

i ordered it used cause i couldn't find it where i live (Greece) and in order to have it in a reasonable price with the rest of the shiping costs. when i got it on my hands i was very suprised because it was brand new.

this book was missing from my Tupac collection. it's what i give to my friends that want to know who Tupac was. all his life in a polished comic book. those who are looking for something deepper should look elsewhere. Good book to start with Tupac's life.
