Product Description

Book Description

An incredible visual biography of the Manic Street Preachers from bassist and lyricist Nicky Wire, and a huge publishing event for November 2011.

Product Description

The first of two titles by the Manic Street Preachers' bassist and lyricist, Nicky Wire. For more than twenty years and from Blackwood, Wales to Tokyo, Japan, Nicky Wire has kept a personal visual history of the band in their various stages from Generation Terrorists through Holy Bible and right up to last year's remarkable album, Postcards from a Young Man. Edited down from over 1,000 of Wire's personal polaroids and with accompanying text by the man himself, Death of The Polaroid promises to be a rich, visual biography of one of the most loved and iconoclastic British bands of the past two decades.

Contrary to what another reviewer claims, there are around 550 polaroids in this book and not 1000 and if you're looking to unearth some new pictures of Richey I counted less than 20 in among the 300 pages, the majority are from 1998-2001 which even MSP said was their non-image image but the biggest let down about these photographs is that around half are absolutely nothing to do with MSP, pictures of motorways, sunsets, snowmen, footpaths, beaches and Sheffield's 1998 Christmas decorations all make an appearance, as does a discarded fridge near Nicky's home which may be of interest to Nicky or the local council but it's of no interest to me.
The design of the book is style over content in that you can fit 4 polaroids per page easily but some pages have 2, some have 1 and some are completely blank and the price of £30 is outrageous, sure it's £12 as I write and I paid £18 for it but for £30 I wouldn't recommend it in any way.
As far as the Polaroid camera itself goes, the truth is that the digital age has made it virtually extinct but let's face it, they never took particularly good photographs in the first place but this does lead me to the one positive in this book and that is Nicky Wire's love for the Polaroid which he expresses in an introduction and a short commentary on the pictures at the back of the book but on the whole, this book is a good opportunity wasted and if you want a book of MSP photographs, buy Mitch Ikeda's 'Forever Delayed'.

A severely disappointing collection. Containing 550 photographs on 300 pages, most of this book reproduces photograph/scans of "classic" sized polaroid prints largely from 1998-2001. There is very little, if any, photographic evidence of the Manics 1991-95, and no identifiable images post 2001. Whilst this is a high quality product in terms of print and paper, the content itself is lacking : at least a third of the images are not identfiable at all, being random (albeit somewhat picturesque) photographs of buildings, nature, snowmen, and steps. Of the rest, probably a quarter are appended by some kind of biro-enscribed marks by Mitch Ikeda, and therefore about a half are shorn of context, date, location, and detail the band hanging around aimlessly. Very little photography of the band performing, and probably the most interesting are those shots taken by photographers from 1991-2001 as test runs for well known photo shoots. There are large clumps of blank and white space, which is designed somewhat randomly, and the photographs are not arranged chronologically, so there is no sense of passing through time. This is nothing more glorious reproductions of less than amazing, often blurry polaroids of little interest. Perhaps the most interesting thing would be a set of interviews and commentary by Nicky Wire (one with Jeremy Deller), and thelurid pink cover. Had I had opportunity to flick through it, I would've certainly put it back down. A disappointment and of little interest to anyone but the band themselves and their shrinking band of fervently fanatical disciples.

Not a great book. 3 Jan 2012
By AmandaM
Format:Hardcover
I bought this as a christmas gift for someone as they are a fan of the Manics. The book arrived sealed up so I didnt see it's contents until christmas morning.I have to say I myself was disappointed.Although the book is quite a large Hard Back-the pages lack content both written & picture wise. Some pages only have 2 pictures with title, time & date-nothing else. And then some photos are just artistic & nothing to do with the band.Thankfully though I didnt pay over the odds for it.The person I bought it for put the book on the coffee table but it hasnt been lifted up since.I would take this indication on how good it is.Wont be buying the sequel if there is one.
