DEATH NOTE follows the story of Light Yagami (Tatsuya Fujiwara - Battle Royale) a brilliant but bored student with great prospects. Life changes dramatically when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god named Ryuk. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies. Light sees an opportunity to rid the world of evil using the powers granted in the Death Note. Police call in the help of the famous, but unconventional detective L when criminals begin to mysteriously die. So begins the battle of wits to see who really is good or evil.

I enjoyed watching Death Note - the anime, and rented the first of the live action movies to see what it was like. I found it really enjoyable, true to the anime original, and decided to wait for this set to buy it. I was not disappointed. You get two excellent, lengthy and intriguing movies, plus a host of extras. They are shown in Japanese with subtitles, which I much prefer to the rather lame dubbed versions that turn up; this way you get to fully appreciate the dense plotting and quality scripting of the original. The CGI work on the shinigami is also super, keeping the style and look of the anime while creating three-dimensional characters. Ryuk is outstanding. The casts in both films are first-rate, the music is good - what more can I say? These are great movies. The one complaint I have on this set - the discs can be hard to get out and replace. But on repeated use the push-button releases do get easier to work.

Very impressive movies with well thought out storylines and intelligent script. The characters are believable and genuinely entertaining. This is the kind of film that makes you wonder what other gems there are out there (besides Battle royale 1&2 and early John woo films) that stand alone in redifining Eastern movie exellance. These are films for people who enjoy being entertained covering all aspects from love, friendship , honor , comedy and detective movies. Not family films but ideal for movie lovers who enjoy highly original and clever films. 10/10

A very worthwhile watch, an interesting story with excellent portrayal of Ryuk, a Death God. Some twists and turns to the story line which are not always obvious. I've not seen the Animated or Comic versions so can not make any comparison. Note that this film is NOT dubbed, but but does have English subtitles. I prefer subtitles to dubbing as you get any sound effects or emphasis of the voices in the original unaltered state but others may prefer dubbed so they are not distracted from any action by having to read what has been said
