The second Sam Turner mystery is diferent to the first. Norman Bunce escapes from a high security prison in the south of England and makes his way North, to York, where he hopes to find his ex-girlfriend, Snow White, who has run off with his stash. Norman is an effective foe for Sam Turner, because Norman is a loner and makes his way in the world by taking whatever he wants and exploiting whoever stands in his way. Sam, of the other hand, draws strength from his relations with other people, he values his friends and cares for their wellbeing. With this dichotomy, Baker presents us with a strongly themed novel that grips from page one. The characters are as strong as ever, and the humour is blacker than the back of the devil.
