Book Description

6 May 2010 Vintage Classic Crime

Rediscover Gladys Mitchell - one of the 'Big Three' female crime fiction writers alongside Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers.

When former banana-grower Edris Tidson hears of a possible sighting of a water-naiad he insists that his wife, her aunt Prissie and Prissie's young ward Connie, travel with him to Winchester in search of the nymph. As tensions rise between Connie and Edris, Prissie invites the renowned psychoanalyst, and unrivalled detective, Mrs Bradley to join them and unofficially observe Edris and his growing obsession. Then two young boys are found drowned and speculation mounts that the naiad is luring them to her deaths. Can Mrs Bradley unravel the mysteries hidden within the river?

Opinionated, unconventional, unafraid... If you like Poirot and Miss Marple, you'll love Mrs Bradley.

Review

"Crime writing's best-kept secret" (Scotsman )

"Gladys Mitchell can always be relied upon for a packed and meaty novel and an intelligent one at that" (Guardian )

"Among the most revered names in British mystery fiction" (Washington Post )

"Slightly silly in parts, wonderfully deliciously absurd in others... The clues and the red herrings are perfectly balanced, the puzzle is enticing enough to make you want to solve it before they do... It is - in short - eminently readable" (www.thebookbag.co.uk )

"The Great Gladys" (Philip Larkin )

4.0 out of 5 stars HIDDEN AGENDAS! 15 Mar 2012
By Mr. D. L. Rees TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Set just after the war, a time of dried eggs and no railings. Retired banana grower Edris Tidson, one with "immoral itches", seeks the water nymph reputedly residing in Winchester's River Itchen. Can she be the one enticing local young men to their doom? Mrs. Bradley investigates.

Out of the five books so far read, this is the most unusual - there never more than just four suspects: Tidson, his much younger wife Crete, his cousin Miss Carmody and her ward Connie. Apart from the deaths, there are duckings, ghosts, secret passages and a crop of black eyes. All very mysterious. Who is doing what and why?

Gladys Mitchell's novels have a firm sense of place, Winchester here described with considerable affection. Her plots lack similar credibility, which for her fans is probably all part of the fun. Mrs. Bradley herself proves no ordinary heroine. Descended from a witch, she is old, cackling and shrivelled - her skin yellow, hands clawlike. At one point here she is even clambering up the inside of a chimney. Miss Marple she most certainly is not.

Yes, much is preposterous, but who cares! This latest adventure entertains and charms, with many chuckles en route.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex plot and interesting background. 20 Sep 2011
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Mrs Bradley is contacted by Miss Priscilla Carmody. She and her niece are staying in a hotel in Winchester with her unwelcome house ghosts - Edris and Crete Tidson. A boy is found drowned and some at least suspect Edris Tidson of being the murderer because he appears at some point to have fallen into the river - or been pushed.

The plot is complex and keeps the reader guessing right from the very first page. I loved the characters and the background which is almost like a guidebook to Winchester without ever being boring.

As ever Mrs Bradley is excellent - unmasking ghosts and tracking down murderers. She has her trusty helper, Laura, with her for some of the book and very necessary she is too as Mrs Bradley herself cannot follow all the suspects at the same time.

I like Gladys Mitchell's books. They are well written with some positively Machiavellian plots and they bring to life an era where people had principles and certain standards of behaviour which are sadly lacking in the modern world. They are excellent stories which draw the reader in without the need for graphic violence and bad language. It is good to see that they are being reissued in paper format and as ebooks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Winchester walkabout 17 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wondering about trying this book? Don't hesitate - for GM fans this is a must, a truly puzzling story, Mrs Bradley resorts to violence and Kitty and Alice reappear PLUS a certain Scottish policeman...
For people who love Winchester this is a remarkably well described trip around and about.
