I can't remember how I came across this book but from the first page, I was hooked. I took it on holiday with me and every available opportunity I got to read it, I did.
It was easy to read, fast, thrilling and it's the only book I've read that has made my heart thump hard in my chest and also caused me to stay up till 6am to finish it whilst shaking as I turned the page. (Didn't help that I was alone in the house..silly me!) I won't go into the details of the book as the other reviews talk about the plot in quite alot of detail, so no need for me to, but regarding the writing it was gory enough to make me squirm but didn't over do it for the sake of shock value. There are no fancy words, intricate sentences, hard to decipher paragraphs, the author says what he has to say and it hits...hard! I have read many crime books and the problem I find with many of them is they try and be too clever and by the time you've managed to figure out what the hell the author was trying to say, you've lost what they were going on about in the first place. A good book drags you in and keeps you there, wanting more without frying your brain. After all, it's supposed to be entertaining, not an algebra lesson. This book is better than good, it's great. I have a few of Paul's earlier books but they don't compare to this one. All authors seem to have there 'star' book, this is it as far as I'm concerned. Looking forward to reading more of his work, but slightly reluctant to for fear of dissappointment. Watch this space.

I can't help but feel that the author was extremely lazy with this book. He threw in some truly gruesome murders to make up for the general lack of substance and completely unbelievable storyline. I understand it is fiction, and therefore not mirroring real life, but to have such a diverse, wealthy and convenient range of friends, who at the drop of a hat agree to leave the country or help him fight to the death, because someone tells them their life is in danger, without so much as a 'WTF?' is asking the reader to throw away their own wisdom, logic and common sense and buy into his ludicrous plotline.
The 'White Devil's' reasons for choosing the main character as a pawn in his game of revenge were never fully explained, and I can't help but feel the author thought the reader was stupid enough not to notice the less than tangible and convincing links and relationships between the characters. Although the end of the book is left open for yet more revenge, I won't be reading anymore of his books to find out if said revenge is ever meted out. However, after investing my time in this book, the plot of an author making someone's death list doesn't seem all that unbelievable after all!

I can honestly say that this was a fantastic read - straight in and moved apace through as well. There is enough detail for you to know that a grisly killing has taken place, but not enough for it to be unnecessarily gratuitous or to be considered gruesome - for me the level it was pitched at was just right. Although we are introduced to the Officer investigating - this book is not about the police chasing a killer and taking us along with them; instead this is about the killer providing us with a confession that he produces by contact with an innocent novelist - by using the modus operandi that he has provided on the pages of his books. Initially our killer deals with those who have wronged him linking the murders so that the police are very much aware that they are dealing with a single killer who is leading them towards the finale. The plot is well thought out and delivery to the reader is such as to keep you reading to find out what the next part of the story provides. There is little deviation from the plot with almost every word necessary to the story line - I was sucked in from the earliest pages and kept on tenter hooks all the way through.
It is normal to double guess who did it but you really knew that the main protagonist the "white Devil" was not somebody we had met in another guise in the book, but the introduction of the assistant gives us the opportunity to wonder who they are and has Matt met him, in fact perhaps he actually knows them. I think readers of Mo Hayder, Peter James, Mark Billingham and Simon Kernick would enjoy this.
