Product Description

Wrongly convicted of the brutal murder of his wife, Danny Manning is exiled to Death Island, the site of America’s favorite reality TV show. Death Island is Hell disguised as Paradise, a place where no one gets off alive unless the audience vote goes his way. Danny’s day-to-day survival depends on a brilliant and hilarious psychopath who knows the ropes. But his ultimate fate lies in the hands of a clergyman’s quirky wife, a smarmy TV host, and Death Island’s fickle home viewers. If voted “off the island,” he will be free, innocent or not. Can he stay alive that long? And will he ever discover the identity of the real murderer?

About the Author

Joan Conning Afman grew up in central New York State and Western Massachusetts and attended schools in both regions. She has an AA degree from SUNY, Farmingdale, a BFA from the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, and an M.A.Ed. degree from CCSU in New Britain, Connecticut. For sixteen years she taught art in the Hartford Public School System before retiring to Florida, where she taught as an adjunct for Northwood University. Joan now divides her time between painting and writing, enjoying the Sunshine State's balmy weather and various social activities. The cover of Death Island is her art work. She has often been told that she "has quite an imagination," and Death Island is certainly a testament to that. She has written one previous novel, The Last Time We Were Here. Joan has four wonderful children and six beautiful grandchildren, is thoroughly enjoying life, and continues to believe that the best is still ahead.

1.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity 17 Jan 2012
By Freckles VINE VOICE
This was extremely disappointing. It isn't often I abandon a book, but this one was rejected about half way through.

The plotline is a good one. The US prison system is fit to burst and a simple remedy is to dump lifers or those awaiting a death sentence on a remote island with very few provisions to fend for themselves. The whole thing is televised for the delictation of viewers. It is set in 2020, but the reader would never know, as it feels very dated.

The characters are poorly drawn and I really couldn't care about their fate. The book is full of typos and poor grammar which compounded my dislike of it. I would call this a missed opportunity...a real shame.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read 14 Oct 2011

Death Island pulled me in from the beginning - the characters are all unique, some very unique, lol. Ms. Afman has created a reality tv scenario that is guaranteed to draw in viewers. Instead of jail time, convicted criminals get sent to Death Island, where there are little societies formed of the survivors. Viewers of the show can vote whether or not to 'save' someone from death. I would watch this show, if it on was on now!

4.0 out of 5 stars exciting thriller 27 Sep 2011
By Harriet Klausner - Published on
In 2020 Congress passed a law that created the ultimate prison for those convicted of capitol punishment offences: a one way ticket to Death Island. No one escapes from this rock as the masses of TV viewers can tell who watch each week this true reality show.

A jury of his peers convicts Danny Manning of being the notorious serial killer Axe Murderer. He insists he is innocent having murdered no one, but he is sent to Death Island for killing five women including his wife Katie. Danny is dropped from a copter along with obese fiftyish financial thief Tom Koranda. He survives the aptly named island for now due mostly to psychopath Martin Sicilia adopting him and an obsession to escape in order to find the real killer; Tom is murdered in less than a week.

Danny's next door neighbor in Northington, Connecticut Charlie Adjavon believes he is innocent especially when a sixth victim is found in New Haven. She would like to help him, but has no idea how. Besides she believes her husband Reverend Paul is having an affair with her very tall married friend Heather Waverly, but begins to wonder whether her BFF who threw the first stone at very tall Heather is the other woman.

Death Island mixes together an adult Lord of the Flies and Roman Coliseum premises with Survivor rules inside of the Schwarzenegger movie The Running Man. The story line is at its best on the island where plants and animals, especially two legged, stalk. Although suddenly emotional Charlie trying to help Danny (not the retired basketball star) seems over the top of Mount Frissell, fans will enjoy wondering whether the protagonist will escape from Death Island.

4.0 out of 5 stars must read! 13 Oct 2011

This is an exciting new plot, and I enjoyed it from start to finish. Intriquing story line, great visuals, and a fast paced book. Do I see movie potential here??
5.0 out of 5 stars Escape from New York 23 Feb 2014

That is what this book reminded me of. Without the fact of the hero being sent in to rescue someone. I literally could not put this book down until I finished it. The story was made even better by the fact the main character wasn't really all that much the hero type. Others were always there to help him and even take care of him while hurt, which was most of the time.

The story involves a period of time al little over a year, and the true hero of the book is Charlie, who not only proves the heroes innocence, but defends her life as well. There is a lot of action in this book, though the villain is fairly obvious. I thought the ending to be a little weak, though I did not take anything away because the rest of the story was so good.
