Review

"... so much fun...Magson is an experienced writer, which shows in the sheer, slick enjoyability of the read. I was happy to place myself in his hands and allow him to manipulate my imagination."
--Praise for Adrian Magson's Lucas Rocco novels

"Brilliant - you just cannot put it down. The gloomy, sombre, atmospheric landscape of Picardie is brilliantly evoked... I eagerly await the next offering."
--Praise for Adrian Magson's French police series

" A stunningly atmospheric follow up to 'Death on the Marais'... the story moves at a cracking pace, with the tension mounting with every page, I couldn't read fast enough. A definite entry for your `not to be missed' list." --Mystery Women Reviews

"... expertly written... an enjoyable read from beginning to end. Rocco is a character that remains with you long after you have finished and... The depressing, grave, atmospheric landscape of Picardie is vividly brought to life." --SHOTS Magazine - Ayo Onatade

"You have to love Rocco... France's answer to Jack Reacher - tall, dark, broad and dedicated to right wrongs. `Death on the Rive Nord' - `c'est magnifique'!"
--crimesquad.com Author of the Month

“ …a darker and subtler novel than ‘Death on the Marais’… The novel is ingeniously plotted and works up to an unexpected climax. A thoroughly enjoyable read from an accomplished crime writer… “
--Historical Novel Society

Product Description

Picardie, 1963. In the dead of night a truck drops a group of illegal workers by a deserted stretch of canal - days later, one of them is found stabbed to death and Inspector Lucas Rocco has a new case to solve.

Trawling the Algerian community for information is a sensitive issue, one that terrifies his bosses who force Rocco to tread carefully. Too carefully for Rocco’s liking.  To add to his problems, amongst the illegal immigrants is a young woman on the run from her brutal gangster husband, Samir Farek – a man with a big agenda:  to take over as gang lord in Paris, and willing to dispose of anyone who gets in his way...

Don't usually read a book with such energy more akin to my long forgotton teenage years but here is a real page turner for even 50 somethings like me.
The second book in this excellent series of detective work in rural France in the 1960s. No attempt to dwell in a less troubled era; real crime here more Maigret than Heartbeat certainly but closer still in the story telling and mood created.
Illegal workers, gangsters, corruption and people smuggling gives it its contempory feel.
Not just a police procedual novel but a genuine crime thriller with characters slowly emerging enhancing its richness not overwhelming the narative that rubbles on a pace. Love the french setting and context of the stories and as at the end of any good book feel a sense of loss and eagerness for the development of this wonderful new detective.

Adrian occasionally writes articles for Writing Magazine/Writers' News to which I subscribe. I found these to be both interesting and inspiring and it was these which encouraged me to buy some of his books to read. They are not my usual genre but I have thoroughly enjoyed Death on the River Nord and Death on the Marais, and have ordered others for future reading. For me his style of writing, his wonderful use of the English language, his descriptions, characters, plots and crafting of the story are perfect and very refreshing. There is no gratuitous bad language either. I could not put either of them down until I had read them to the end.
