Format: DVD Verified Purchase
This is not a review of the movie because the DVD was of such poor quality that it was unwatchable, it also had no soundtrack---at least in the first ten minutes, after which I gave up. Imagine an old video cassette that has been watched so many times that it's more or less beyond use, that's what you get here. There's no excuse for releasing a disc like this and purchasing it will only encourage the company behind it in the belief that it's OK to rip customers off and that they don't need to try any harder. I should add that this is a UK released disc, not the US one also reviewed here.

Dutch-made thriller 3 Nov. 2009
By Annie Van Auken - Published on
Gray market discs such as this offer no commentary, deleted scenes or other bonus features. Dubs are "best available source" and can vary from very good to only fair.

The original Nederlansche name of DEATH IN THE SHADOWS (1985) is "De Prooi."

When middle-aged Trudy is struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver, Valerie, her nearly 18-year-old daughter learns that she isn't a blood relative. The police want to know why the dead woman was receiving money each month. Valerie interviews people and visits a few odd places, hoping for answers and to try and locate her real parents.

In one very dark scene, bicycle-riding Valerie is nearly flattened by a persistent motorist obviously intent on killing her. Inspector Mellema, the detective investigating Trudy's death, believes the two street incidents are related, and that whoever twice ran over the mother wants Valerie dead, as well.

A generally above-average story plumbs the prurient a few times and we see more of the teen and a peep show gal than necessary. Other than that, it's a well-dubbed and plotted thriller with a unique music score that just may hold your interest.

This who-done-it leaves you wondering who cares, by the end. 12 Dec. 2014
By sjrSpike - Published on
Maybe it was a problem with the English translation from Dutch, but the plot is choppy and sometimes outright guesswork ... characters willingly helping would abruptly stop answering questions and demand the questioner return that night, 'because I have done nothing for years.' And the acting was uneven at best, though the young main actress did wander around topless for quite a few minutes, if you're into that.

It's European so a little slow working on the plot 15 July 2013

Actually, the plot is vague in the beginning and the actors do a lot of "thinking" that eventually is clear to the viewer.
