I have read all Michele Giuttari's books about Michele Ferrara and this is, in my opinion, by far the weakest. The others in the series have all been set in Italy and this is divided between Calabria and New York, an uneasy mix which never seems happy in either setting. Ferrara himself only appears half way through the book and takes a merely peripheral part in the plot. I found the American detectives unconvincing and with little character. There were far too many characters in this plot and I found myself trying to remember who was who and whether it mattered anyway. I even began to wonder if the incentive for this particular novel had been a trip to the States for the author! Petra, Ferrara's long-suffering wife emerges with more character than most of the rest of the cast! The idea itself, of related crimes carried out in Italy and America was a good premise, but somehow it never really gained enough depth to hold interest. If you like blood and brooding Italian women devoted to the "men of honour" then this might be for you. However I am waiting for Ferrara to return to Florence which seems to be the correct setting for this interesting detective. Please, please stay in Italy next time!
