Product Description

Product Description

When the body of a theology student is found on a desolate stretch of East Anglian coast, his wealthy father demands that Scotland Yard should re-examine the verdict of accidental death. Commander Adam Dalgliesh agrees to pay a visit to the young man's theological college, St Anselm's, a place he knew as a boy, expecting no more than a nostalgic return to old haunts and a straightforward examination of the evidence. Instead he finds himself embroiled in intrigue, conflict and dangerous secrets as the college is torn apart by a sacrilegious and horrifying murder..."Beautifully-written...consummately plotted". ("Observer"). ""Death in Holy Orders" is pure pleasure". ("Spectator"). "Michael Jayston does an excellent job of breathing life into Adam Dalgliesh". "Daily Express". This is a suspenseful story of murder in a clerical college from bestselling author P.D. James, read by Michael Jayston.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I'm not overly found of unabridged audio books unless they really suit the format. I'm afraid PD James' work really doesn't. Unabridged the audio book is something of a marathon with 12 discs and around 14 hours of listening. This reflects, obviously, the rather long book. Short books work better! Moreover, James' style style is not all-action but rather slow burning. That's fine for a novel but in audio format you really do need to listen closely or miss the multi-character plot. I found that I had to listen to the first CD two or three times because, listening while driving, I simply wasn't following closely enough. Having got through all CDs I'm not sure the outcome was entirely worth the effort, and unlike reading James' work, I did find listening an effort.

Things are not entirely negative. The narrator does an excellent job bringing life to the many characters and the narration is clear and well paced. As the audio is unabridged you know that plots have not been truncated by arbitrary editorial choices, and I suspect that James aficionados will appreciate this. I actually think it would be helpful to read the book and then listen to the audio book. Less effort would then be required to keep track of the plot. The audio book was good enough to take me to the novel which I've now read and very much enjoyed. So, when I have a spare 14 hours I'll return to the CDs.

Atmospheric listening 16 April 2011
By Damaskcat TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Adam Dalgleish is asked to investigate an apparent accidental death by the victim's father. The setting is a high church theological college on the East Anglian coast. When another death occurs it is clear that there is something going on at the college that needs investigating. This book is, in my opinion, P D James best work and Michael Jayston reads it well.

This complete unabridged recording is of excellent quality and conveys the atmospheric setting in such a way that will send shivers down the spine of listeners. The convoluted relationships between all involved are well drawn and the listener gets the sense of much going on under the surface of everyday events.

This audio book is well worth listening to even if you have read the book as I found it brought out nuances which were not apparent to me when reading the book. PD James's masterful use of the English language is clear from this audio book. Some books do not come over well in audio format but this one does. Enjoyable and spine chilling.

Murderous Monks. 15 Sep 2011
By AlanMusicMan TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
P.D James' impeccable sense for characters and sense of place are to the fore in this adaptation. The sound designer did a great job: I found the sound scapes of East Anglia and of the inner sanctums of the monastic school utterly believable. Not the usual "sea sounds disc 1, track 12 waves breaking" and "lots of eacho tio indicate a cloister" - all much more sensitive and original than that. Well done, someone uncredited!

Great performances, and well differentiated voices (a factor that can make or break radio drama where visual differentiation is obviously not possible) made this adaptation a pleasure to listen to.

If I have one criticism it is that it seemed to me to be a little too long. I thought it could have been trimmed down quite a lot without losing very much. Highly recommended though.

There is a big difference between a dramatisation and an unabridged audio book.
