Product Description

Egypt, October 1942

The battle for North Africa rages fiercely along the length of the Egyptian coast . . . Punching their way deep behind enemy lines, the newly formed SAS - under the enigmatic Lt Col David Stirling - carries out daring raids against the Germans.

Lt Tom Caine leads a small squad of SAS men on a desperate mission far into hostile territory. His brief: to sabotage a terrible weapon being secretly developed by the Nazis in the desolate Libyan hills . . . If he fails the Axis forces will almost certainly be unstoppable.

Caine faces the full force of the German military might, but what he doesn't know is that there is a traitor among his own men. Ultimately, his fate will rest in the hands of one woman, Special Ops agent Betty Nolan.

Only one thing is for certain in this war - who dares wins . . .

In a way, this book is even better than part one. You get all the same characters but you learn more about them, the action is fast and you get a real sense of the desert much more than in The Last Commando: you can taste the heat, the flies and the dust. Caine, now a lieutenant in the SAS, and his men, are sent in to destroy stocks of Olzon-13, a disorienting agent the Axis are planning to use to spread confusion during Lightfoot - Montgomery's long awaited breakout from Alamein. This is a time of decoys, feints and double-feints, when nothing is what it seems to be, not even the dummy armoured divisions spread across the Western Desert. Caine and his SAS team have to risk death against huge odds in a world where everything, even their own mission, is an illusion. Maddy Rose is back again, this time in her identity as Betty Nolan of G(R)but this time the roles are reversed: it is up to her and the Bedouin girl Layla to rescue Caine and his men before it's too late. The story gripped me the whole way through - five stars, fantastic!

Smashing stuff from Michael Asher as Newly Minted Lieutenant Tom Caine heads off into the Blue leading his own Patrol of SAS. It's all comic book action with dolops of John Harris, Alistair McLlean and almost every "Commando Comic" I read from 1972 onwards. Is this a bad thing? No. I was not looking for something heavy bemoaning the horrors of War or thought provoking bout man's inhumanity to man, but some chap biffing the boche, hammering the hun and throwing lots of No. 36 Grenades in doing so.
And like another reviewer has mentioned he does make up lots of words for things going bang, which is a pretty good thing as lots of things go bang around Tom Caine.

Looking forward to Number Three.

Hi, i read the first book, and mostly enjoyed it, despite the constant references to flashing blue eyes etc, fortunately this was toned down in book two. However, the book is enjoyable, if you dont take it too serious. It's boy's own stuff, but sometimes the purple prose of people luffing, blebbing etc is just too much, it almost becomes comedic. An entertaining afternoons read, but not one thats going to stay with you for the right reasons i'm afraid.

Good Book!
I really enjoyed the first book and I could wait to read this sequel. However I did find it was slow moving and with too much emphasis on a love story and not enough action. Read more

OK and a good read if you don't expect too much
This second outing for Tom Caine is OK and a good enough read if you don't expect too much of it. I didn't really enjoy it as much as the first novel and will probably leave the... Read more

Worth a Look
Similar in flavour to book 1; if you liked that, you'll like this. However I found it a little too 'comic book' orientated due to the gung ho superhero atmosphere and some of the... Read more

If you read book one you know the plot - add a few comic book phrases...
Sadly disappointing is all I can say about this book especially after the promising first book.

The plot is (to my mind) almost the same only difference is the authors... Read more

cliched mess
Yep I will outrage people by going for 2 stars. For me three stars is a perfectly acceptable, average book. Two suggests major flaws and sadly I thought this had major flaws. Read more
