Product Description

Product Description

Chris Pascoe is fascinated by the English Civil War. He also likes beer. So when the thought came to him to set out on a pub crawl around the sites of the English Civil War, it was an idea too good to ignore.Helped (or should that be hindered) by his best mate Pete, Chris sets out to see for himself the sites of five years of English carnage, and their nearest watering holes. Their trek might not be as bloody as the war they are following, but with ghosts, skinheads and drunken friends to deal with, Chris has still got a battle on his hands to reach the journey's end. This is history writing at its most hilarious. It features a think Timeteam with a Tankard. It will appeal to fans of John O'Farrell and Sturat Maconie.

About the Author

Chris Pascoe was born in Amersham, Bucks in 1966, and has so far only managed to make it seven miles down the road to High Wycombe, Bucks. He is the author of two previous books: 'A Cat Called Birmingham' and its sequel, 'You Can Take the Cat Out of Slough...'.

My husband bought this book after hearing the author on a radio show, because the English Civil War is a favourite period of his and he was excited to see it being done in such a different, light-hearted way.

He loved it, laughing from start to finish and he very much enjoyed the history, pubs, ghost stories and hilarious situations the author and his travelling companion got themselves into.

Based on his recommendation I thought I'd have a look, although it seemed a 'bloke' type of book. I was instantly hooked! I couldn't put the book down. What great humour and what brilliant story-telling. A period of history that previously seemed uninteresting opened up to me, with real characters and gripping battles.

Most of all, it's a good, feel-good book to thoroughly lift the spirits.

It's a book that makes an already fascinating period of history even more fascinating by properly humanising some of its main characters. Prince Rupert, the wonderful cavalier romantic who could start a fight alone in an empty field and after the war blew his friends hands off for fun. And Essex his complex adversary who could never seem to decide whether to be cautious...or strip down to his shirtsleeves and bait a heavily armed throng coming straight at him. Then there's the brave and gung-ho Sir Posthumous Kirton and his Pikemen, 'all of whom no doubt expected to soon have `posthumous' linked to their names in some way', the womanising Earl of Newcastle, and the ghostly Whitecoats. Excellent story-telling, easily readable and very hard to put down from start to finish.

We absolutely loved the book. We're particularly interested in the 1600's and attend a great many events, but you don't have to be a history lover to appreciate it because it's told in a way that mixes wartime drama with humour (in the shape of the hilarious pub crawl) to make a marvellous read.

Mixed bag
This book is categorised under humour and that is the best way to approach it. A serious student of history, (not to mention English pubs) will probably be disappointed. Read more
