3.0 out of 5 stars Below-par whodunnit, but fun for mystery fans, 26 Sep 2000
By A Customer
At the center of this book is a fairly ordinary whodunnit in the classic "locked-room" tradition. There's a good range of suspects and motives; however, the way that the sleuth solves it depends on such a feeble clue that there's little to admire here.

However, what makes this book interesting for mystery fans is its setting, centred on a crime-bookshop, and the numerous references to other crime-novels that come thick and fast on every page. It's great fun recognising them, or for adding yet more books to your "to-be-read" list. As such, if you're not well-read in the crime genre, you might miss a lot of the fun in this book, and be left with a below-par whodunnit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid rainy day read..., 29 Dec 1998
By A Customer
I love mysteries, and the premiere of the Death on Demand series is a winner. The author makes "whodunit" a little easier to figure out than I like, but the strength of the book far out weighs any faults.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great, but may be worth to try, 23 Jan 2004
Annie Darling is the owner of a bookshop located on a small island that hosts an unlikely large number of crime fiction writers. During a meeting of those writer one of them got killed and Annie is eager to investigate about the murder, especially because she is one of the prime suspects.
In my opinion the book is nothing special and the mystery in itself is rather disappointing. At times things are far too obvious and at others they simply does not make sense (you can spot a few minor contradictions in the story).
However the setting is really nice, the idea of the bookshop is appealing and the continuous references to famous detective stories and mystery writers may attract fans of the genre. For these reasons it may be worth to explore some other books of this series, hoping that the quality improves.
