About the Author

Hazel Holt was born in Birmingham, England, where she attended King Edward VI High School for Girls. She studied at Newnham College, Cambridge, and went on to work at the International African Institute in London, where she became acquainted with the novelist Barbara Pym, whose biography she later wrote. She also finished one of Pym’s novels after Pym died. Holt has also recently published My Dear Charlotte, a story that uses the actual language of Jane Austen's letters to her sister Cassandra to construct a Regency murder mystery. Holt wrote her first novel in her sixties, and is a leading crime novelist. She is best known for her Mrs. Malory series. Her son is novelist Tom Holt. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Death of a Dean 8 Feb 2012

Sheila Mallory's childhood friends, David and Francis Beaumont, are at loggerheads. David has financial problems and wants Francis to sell their jointly owned family home in Taviscomb. Francis is Dean at a nearby cathedral but he does not treat his family in a very Christian fashion.

His family - his wife and two children - are very much under his thumb and he lectures his brother on his lifestyle and financial choices. David goes to stay with Sheila to take a break from his problems and visits Francis again but when Francis dies of a morphine overdose David finds himself cast in the role of firs murderer. Sheila is unconvinced about David's guilt and starts to do some digging herself and uncovers more than she wanted to know about the family.

I thought this was a well written cosy mystery. If you like your crime novels a little more read in tooth and claw you may not enjoy it. The author's portrayal of small town life is excellent and she is equally good at the picture she paints of a family under siege from a charismatic control freak.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A GOOD WRITER 15 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I love detective fiction; I love the mystery of Cathedral Closes; I love small town intrigue.

So I took a chance with this book.

And I'm glad I did. Ms Holt has an easy and delightful writing style; the plot is well crafted; the characters drawn in a three dimensional way and the descriptions of the places are so vivid, that after a very short time, you are there, in the story, along with the other characters, whom you recognise as friends, or otherwise, just as would Mrs Mallory, a delightful woman herself, down to earth, but intelligent and well read; just the kind of person you'd want as a friend.

I'm delighted with the book and have gone on since to read another 4 of these stories. And I shall buy more.
