A delightful read 18 Aug 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have only recently found the John Rawlings mysteries and, having read this first one, I have bought all the other available paperbacks.

Ms.Lake has described the characters' behaviour the scenery, characters and environment so well that one is right there with it all - understanding and enjoying every minute.

Excellent plots and throughly enjoyable throughout.

Deryn Lake is a pseudonym of a well know historical novelist. Among the books she has written are the popular John Rawlings Mysteries, Death on the Romney Marsh, Death in the Peerless Pool, Death at the Apothecaries' hall, Death at the Devil's Tavern and others. As all her titles are preceded by the word death, this is a pretty good indication regarding the contents of the books and very good historical murder mysteries they are. `Deryn Lake' live near Hastings, in East Sussex

Freshly qualified as a fully trained apothecary, John Rawlings is more than happy to celebrate at the Vaux Hall Pleasure Gardens, that is until during his revelries he trips over the dead body of a young girl. After initially being suspected of the crime himself, he so impresses the powers that be that he is called upon to investigate the crime.

The author conjures up the period that the book takes place in so beautifully. John Rawlings is a pleasant and likeable young man and becomes like an old friend to the reader as this series of books progress. The style of the author makes for easy reading but that is not to say that the plots are solved so easily.

The first in Deryn Lake's series of 18th century detective novels, this introduces us to John Rawlings the apothecary and his colourful group of family and friends. Rawlings finds himself caught up in investigations into a murder in London's Vaux Hall Gardens, and thus begins his association with the early form of the Flying Squad. If you don't normally enjoy historical novels, don't worry - this is more Hogarth than Austen! A great read whilst you wait for the new Lindsay Davis to come out!
