M M Kaye is unsurpassable in the murder series at creating a rich evocative picture of a place and a set of curious and interesting characters in depth and with some grace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely spiffing 10 July 2013

A good old fashioned rip-snorting adventure that reads like an old Cary Grant movie. Fun to read and reminiscent of a more elegant time which, sadly, has gone forever. A good read for anyone who enjoys the old 40's and 50's films but maybe not for those who prefer something more modern.

I first read M M Kaye's series of Murder in.... various exotic locales over 20 years ago, and as they were being made available on Kindle I decided to order and re read my personal favourite the Cyprus one.
I always rather liked the heroine in this one, with her long Rapunzel locks and literally hair raising adventures.
It's not very scary, or violent nor is much blood shown as split, it is in fact all rather middle class, refined and elegant, but M M Kaye captures the old regime just after the war beautifully and the atmosphere, and there is a certain cosy comfortableness about it all.
There is a twist or two but not in the romance side which moves along as expected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, light reading 1 July 2013

I most certainly recommend this book as pleasant and light reading. As always the author is unsurpassed in her descriptions of the landscape – in this case Cyprus. She obviously wrote her books on base of considerable research and, therefore, her stories seem authentic. She also writes about things that matter to women and men probably don’t even notice. That is one of the things that I appreciate most about Ms. Kaye's heroines. I don't like so much if the heroine in the end needs to be saved by a strong male even though she seems intelligent enough on her own. I probably am just a different generation than Ms. Kaye.
