Product Description

Thea Osbourne is thanking her lucky stars. After two disastrous housesitting incidents in which she has unwittingly become embroiled in murder and mayhem, she is only too happy to have a bit of peace and quiet. The only positive thing that has come out of her experiences, she thinks, is her blossoming relationship with DI Phil Hollis and she relishes the thought of their spending some quality time together while she helps him clear out his late aunt's cottage in the small village in which he grew up. Even meeting Phil's childhood acquaintance, the eccentric Ariadne with her abrupt manner and queer habits, cannot detract from Thea's happiness. But the bad luck that plagues the hapless Thea and her beloved spaniel Hepzibah is never far away. With autumn drawing in, preparations for Samhain, or Halloween, are well underway when Ariadne discovers a very tangible reminder of the season of death on Notgrove Barrow: a body laid out like a sacrificial victim. Unlikely companions, Thea and Ariadne find themselves thrown together as they try to uncover the events that led to the fatality. It soon becomes apparent that the cosy village has more than its share of secrets. But just how far will some go to keep them hidden...

Best so far! 5 Feb 2011
By Penny Waugh VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Unlike other reviewers I was delighted to find another narrator with another viewpoint, and a feisty one to boot, so unlike the whining Thea who did her best to put me off the first two books.
Thea does have a marvellous propensity for being in the wrong place at the wrong time as regards murder, and maybe one should sympathise with her for that, but personally I could live without Thea and Phil, if not the dogs. I was semi-reluctant to try this third book, but I'm glad I did. Not sure I would carry on with the series though, especially if Thea is back.

Busman's Holiday 4 Dec 2010
By Damaskcat TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the third book in this author's series featuring Thea Osborne. Thea and Phil Hollis decide to spend a week at his late aunt's cottage deciding what to keep and what to throw out so that the house can be sold. The book is narrated by Ariadne, who lives opposite and who has known Phil for most of his life. This is interesting because it gives the reader another view of Thea and Phil. Their week off turns into something of a busman's holiday for Phil when a body is found at a local sacred site in what appears to be a ritual killing.

I did not take to Ariadne I'm afraid which rather spoilt the book for me. She seemed unnecessarily picky about other people at times and impatient with anything which did not fit in with her view of the world. She did however make a nice contrast to the serene and mature character traits exhibited by Thea herself. I did enjoy the pagan and Masonic undertones of the book and I liked some of the peripheral characters such as Stella, the female undertaker friend of Ariadne. I found it quite difficult to keep the members of Ariadne's pagan group separate in my head but I think that was perhaps deliberate as Ariadne had trouble understanding them as well.

I thought the plot was nicely complicated and intriguing and I thought the way friendships sometimes overlap and sometimes occupy discrete circles was well done. It is not always easy to see in real life where friendships intersect and there can be some surprising connections which only come to light when something unexpected happens. The book was worth reading if only to get an `outsider's' view of Thea and Phil and this for me gave added depth to the two characters after their appearance in the previous two books in the series. I am looking forward to reading the fourth instalment.
