5.0 out of 5 stars Based on a true story, 19 Aug 2002
By Sara (HEMSWORTH, WEST YORKSHIRE United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is one of those 'based-on-a-true-story' films that actually is pretty good. The performances by Kellie Martin & Tori Spelling are nothing to complain about. The film isn't boring at all. Tori Spelling, known for her role as Donna Martin on 'Beverly Hills 90210' stars at the cheerleader who meets her death. Prior to her death, she is one of those snobby, self-centred rich girls you would love to smack. Kellie Martin is the girl who aims to be popular, she would do anything to be just like the cheerleader girls, even earning extra money to go on a ski trip to hang out with them. Kellie's character envies Tori's character-after all she's a cheerleader, has popular friends, rich parents, the stylish clothes. Her obsession makes her unbalanced ( which is clearly seen when she invites the cheerleader to a party so she can be friends with her.) Of course, an obsessed & unbalanced person can lead one to make hideous mistakes: Kellie's character just loses control & well...judging by the title of the film, you know what will happen next. The film is an American one, but people on both sides of the Atlantic will have no problem identifying with the characters. I checked to see how true the film was to the real incident & articles I found on the Internet were spot on.

The film could be classified a 'guilty pleasure'. Some may find the title cheesy. But it's a watchable film which you may find yourself watching over & over again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too one-sided, 26 Mar 2007
Not a bad film - Kellie Martin does a great job as Angela - a shy girl who adores Stacy. Stacy has got everything Angela lacks, she is popular and very confident. She is not a nice girl but a bully who mistreats everyone she doesn't like, especially the class's outcast Monica.

Angela fails to make yearbook staff, she doesn't become cheerleader, she fails to become Stacy's friend... When Stacy sneers at her unmercifully, Angela loses her temper and stabs Stacy to death.

A believable story and - I have read quite a lot about the actual case - a very authentic film.

You heartily sympathize with the murderess Angela and wish her a happy-end - and that's my problem.

The film is far too one-sided - it shows no sympathy at all for the murdered girl (if you are interested in the actual case, try google... The victim's real name was Kirsten Costas, Angela Delvecchio is Bernadette Protti, the town is Orinda in California and the High School's name is Miramonte).

Kirsten Costas was the victim, not the killer, and a murdered 15-year-old deserves sympathy, regardless of her behaviour! Whatever provocation Bernadette had does not excuse what she did.

Bernadette Protti was released in 1992 at the age of 23 - still young enough to start a new life, to complete her education, to find a boyfriend , raise a family etc. - opportunities that were denied Kirsten Costas.

Did anyone who praised this film stop to think about Kirsten, her friends and especially her parents who will never get over losing her daughter?
