5.0 out of 5 stars Death on a Branch Line, Andrew Martin: , 10 Aug 2008
By Dorothy V. Nelson (Lancashire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Andrew Martin's Death on a Branch Line is the 5th railway detective novel of a 6 book series. They are all excellent but this latest book underlines his great writing skill through its movement and stillness, and a handful of compelling quirky characters. Tension is achieved by a race against the clock; the sleepy Yorkshire village is curiously empty. I couldn't put the book down once I'd started, and I was frustrated to have rushed through to the last page so hastily. I didn't want it to end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guilty or not guilty?, 6 Nov 2008
By Damaskcat (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Jim Stringer, railway detective, meets convicted murderer Hugh Lambert at York station and is convinced Hugh is not guilty even though he is to face the death penalty in just over 48hours. Jim had intended to spend the weekend in Scarborough with his wife Lydia but instead they travel to an isolated Yorkshire village to try and prevent another murder which Hugh fears may happen. Jim and Lydia soon find things are not as simple as they thought and they start seeing threats behind every tree in the woods surrounding the village. Everyone is a suspect and it is not until close to the end of the book that the whole thing is revealed as far more complicated than Jim had supposed. This is an unusual story set in 1911 when war is imminent and there are potential spies everywhere. The characters are interesting and believable and I particularly liked Lydia with her down to earth attitudes and her interest in the struggle for women's votes. The story is well written and the plot intricate enough to keep the reader guessing until very near the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jim Stringer. Steam Detective of Steam Detectives, 5 Jul 2009
By MartinS "afj_uk" (Shrtopshire, England) - See all my reviews
Jim Sringer is, once again, a railway detective.

In 1905, it is his job to guard a convicted killer at York station until he can be taken to the jail in which he is to be executed. But the convicted man does something that, to Jim's mind, shows that he cannot be the killer. And he warns Jim that his brother's life is in danger at their country home.

Jim should be going on holiday with his wife, but instead he takes her on a secret mission to save not only an innocent man from the gallows, but to stop another killing.

But exactly who can Jim trust? His Chief? The weird railway worker in the village? The publican and his family? The vicar? The travelling salesman in German model trains? The mysterious figures who appear and disappear at will? Who tried to murder the travelling salesman? And why? What is the connection with Germany?

This is a highly recommended read.

Sadly this is drivel. It starts out well with good period description of Victorian railways, but then deteriorates with a sorry plot that seems to ramble and go nowhere. Read more
