Synopsis

This is a 'John Rawlings' Georgian mystery. Apothecary John Rawlings has been summoned to Devon by Elizabeth di Lorenzi, his beautiful but unpredictable mistress. Leaving his young daughter Rose in the good care of her grand-father Sir Gabriel Kent, Rawlings sets off for Exeter on board the stagecoach. His fellow-passengers are a motley crew, and include a large and talkative German lady; Cuthbert Simms, a dance-master; and Jack Beef, the so-called 'Black Pyramid', a bare-knuckle fighter. Before the journey's end a man has been found brutally murdered at the Half Moon Inn, and Rawlings is once again drawn, somewhat reluctantly, into a complex and dangerous intrigue.

I've read all the books in tnis series and as an avid reader of historical mysteries the first novels were easy to read and enjoyable. This though is very poor. It's not only that it is a straight copy of the Agatha Christie novel but it is so obviously this that within a few chapters one completely loses interest.Very poor, with characters of no interest, badly written and a stolen plot, The mystery is how the author got away with it!

I have loved all the previous John Rawlings book but this one was a big disapointment , it had the feel of a pot boiler churned out to a formula with a story line shamelessly pinched from Murder on the Orient Express. It lacked the sparkle and style of the previous books.I only hope that this was a one off abberation and that Deryn gets back on form with the next in the series.

This is the first time I have used a Kindle for a new book, as opposed to a paper copy- very pleased with it - easy to read - would do so again - so keep publishing new books on Kindle
