Amazon.co.uk Review

That Death Before Musick, the third album from this Californian punk-metal shock unit exists at all is down to the sterling reserves of aggression and passion displayed by band leader Casey Chaos. The band severed ties with their previous record label after disappointing sales of their previous album, 2000's excellent We Have Come for Your Parents. Even without a deal, though, there was no sign of Chaos' dedication waning. With typical regard for personal wellbeing (that means absolutely none) the frontman maxed out his personal credit cards just to get Death Before Musick in the can. Luckily, it sounds like money well spent. "Hello (One Chord Lovers)" is what Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" would have sounded like if Axl Rose was really as pissed off as he claimed, while "California's Bleeding" is a mini-masterpiece of murderous punk pathology that takes its cue from American outsider touchstones like the Stooges and the Dead Boys, but if anything, concentrates the intensity of the assault. As ever, Chaos' raging anti-establishment lyrics only occasionally gel into any focus amid the maelstrom of reverb-soaked rock guitar--something of a shame, as he sings them with no lack of conviction. Still, the overall effect is agreeably sturdy, and just occasionally, as on "Oblivion Stereo", Amen sound positively heroic. More power to their bruised elbows. --Louis Pattison

***Includes four bonus tracks***

Sleeve-notes include new interview with Casey
Chaos and Duke Decter by Malcolm Dome.

Booklet includes additional photos supplied by

Few bands in recent times have had the fearsome
reputation of Amen. Their unrelenting, uncompromising
power and fury has made them one of the most adored
and respected names of the generation.
Led by front-man Casey Chaos
a man who quite literally
bleeds for his art - the impressive 'Death Before Musick',
saw the band signing to the EatUrMusic label, run by
System Of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian,
There's no question that this album, produced by Chaos
and Malakian, is a tirade, a tornado of emotions. But for
Chaos, it wasn't the birth of a fresh era for Amen, but
meant to be the end of the line. He had poured so much
of himself into the record, one that was the climactic,
darkly orgiastic conclusion for Amen, or should have
been.......
Listening again to 'Death Before Musick', we need what
Casey Chaos stands for now more than ever.

Amen are an interesting band, Despite their music essentially being a harsh and violent punk style a lot of metal fans got into the band. They essentially began as a one-man punk band but rose to public awareness during the Nu Metal era, with their 1999 and 2000 album's 'Amen' and 'We Have Come For Your Parents,' with Shannon Larkin on the Drums, produced by famed Nu Metal producer Ross Robinson and released on Roadrunner Records and then major label Virgin Records, which may have stopped a lot of punk fans getting into the band.

After a label dispute their 3rd album disappeared off the face of the earth and the band got dropped; later a different 3rd album called 'Join Or Die,' was only sold on tour. Finally in 2004, the band released still one more 3rd album, 'Join Or Die,' which was recorded across a whole bunch of studios with a lot of help from friends and supporters.

This was the last album to feature Shannon Larkin on drums and as of mid-2011, still the most recent Amen album. The music at first may seem confusing to fans of their first two albums as the direction and certainly the production of the music is very different and some people found it to be a watering down of the Amen sound.

The album is a real grower however, and nearly every song has the capability of becoming a favourite. The choruses are catchy and memorable; there is a lot of good riffs, fun drumbeats and brilliant lyrics and overall there is just a lot of top quality music that while being different to the two records which came before, is certainly worth listening to.

Standout tracks include 'Neutron Liars,' 'F*ck In LA,' and 'Westwood Fallout,' all of which are aggressive and enjoyable without sounding sloppy, all with a really good chorus. As a whole however, the album is pretty consistent and there is no real spikes or dips in quality.

Overall, Join Or Die is a strong album from Amen and very enjoyable. Don't write it off without giving it a fair listen, and a couple of extra spins to acclimatise to the different sound, this is an album that still stands up to this day and that I still listen to fairly regularly after all this time.

I bought this album on the strength of the single "California's Bleeding" and was not disappointed with the rest of the album which continued in much the same mold. This is the only Amen album i own and would say that the band's main feature seems to be Casey Chaos' punk metal, anarchic and aggressive vocals. The songs are fast and aggressive with a mix of anti-establishment vocals and angry guitar and drum work. Highlights include the singles as well as "Money Infection" and "Please kill me." In short, this would be a good album for anyone who likes modern punk and similar bands such as the distillers. Buy it now if you are a Amen fan or just fancy something new to listen to when you are plotting to bring down the goverrnment. Best served loud!

It has to be said that Amen are more noted for their line up changes and the suicidal live performances of their maniacal frontman Casey Chaos. But if you own the first two albums, both furious slabs of pure white hot fury, then you listen to this new offering and you will wonder whether monsieur Chaos is mellowing out. The passion of delivery doesn't seem to run through the album as it does in the last two. Indeed a lot of the songs sound almost poppy, with their hook ridden choruses and slightly naff lyrics. This is especially apparent when they are compared to the anarchy inherent in older tracks such as 'Coma America' and 'Piss Virus'. That's not to say its all bad, despite it being slightly more commercial than older tracks, 'California's Bleeding' still retains some of Chaos' trademark snot-nosed punk style. However a lot of the songs resort to cliché, such as 'Please Kill Me', which has lyrics that wouldn't look out of place being sung by a sub-par nu-metal band rather than Amen. The most ironic track of all though, is 'Bring me the Heads' where he verbally berates members of the entertainment industry for selling out, although in truth we have to question whether his own words could be directed at him. Is this the end for Amen?
