Product Description

Product Description

The debut thriller in the internationally acclaimed series- available for the first time in the United States

A long-time number one bestseller in his native Sweden, Åke Edwardson's profile was conspicuously raised when his novel Frozen Tracks was chosen as a finalist for a 2008 Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Until now, however, the novel that launched Edwardson's critically acclaimed Erik Winter series has never been available in the United States. With a new series translator who fully captures Edwardson's signature atmospheric style, Death Angels is America's introduction to Sweden's youngest Chief Inspector as he teams up with Scotland Yard to solve the mysterious parallel killings of young British and Swedish tourists. Richly evocative of mid-nineties South London and Gothenburg, Sweden, Death Angels is a brilliant opening to a mesmerizing series that has become a phenomenon in international crime fiction.

This is a perfectly constructed police procedural.

This is the first in the Erik Winter's series and a great introduction to his character. Also introduced in this book is Steve Macdonald, a detective in England, another very likable character.

They partner up to solve murders in both Sweden and England, and interestingly, the two men think very much the same, almost mirroring each others thoughts.

It's psychologically driven, and perfectly paced from the first page to the last.

What you don't get is a strong sense of place, which was fine for me, well defined characters that I like is what attracts me to a book, and the plot's secondary.

If you like well written, psychologically driven police procedurals with strong characters, you'll enjoy this book very much.

Poor translation 5 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
If, like me, you want to be able to suspend disbelief when you read a book - then you'll have a problem with this if you are British. Whereas it is fine for the (American) translator to use American English in the sections set in Sweden, it simply doesn't work for the parts set in London - especially when 'English' characters speak American dialogue, using terms no English person would use. In general, too, the style of the writing is poor; I can't say if this reflects the original, or is again down to the translation.

The story is pretty conventional fare, and does not encourage me to repeat the experience with another book in the series. Not a patch on Fossum, Mankell, Indridason, Nesser or a host of other excellent Scandinavian crime writers, on this evidence.

I don't know how good the story is. I couldn't get past the first couple of chapters. The translation is awful. If I read a book set in the US then I am completely happy that it should be written in US English. The language of LA is not that of Peter Wimsey. But this book is set in Sweden and London. It is a London which exists only in the mind of Americans who have never been there. It is a London where you turn from Oxford into Regent without a street appearing, where there are mailmen on the streets and beer is discussed in very odd terms. Curiously the basic research is very good - the geography is sound and the names correct - just not expressed in the English idiom. This is not appropriate for a cast of characters which is, in part, British. I assume that the research and setting was done by the author. It is the translator who should be ruined the book.
