Product Description

Product Description

In this survey, the author gives an account of Egyptian burial customs, the reasons for their existence and how they changed in response to developments in religion. The author describes the tombs and the objects inside them - furniture, food, inscriptions, temples for animal gods - and shows how the Egyptians coped with the problems of security involved in guarding the afterlife of their dead. He goes on to demonstrate how recent scientific developments have added a new dimension to research, enabling scholars to trace family relationships, identify prevalent diseases and sometimes to discover the full pathological case histories of mummies, producing a detailed picture of this culture.

An excellent book, listing the reasons why the Ancient Egyptian took such elaborate precautions to protect his burial.Traces the development of both Royal and private tomb architecture in an easily understood manner. Also has a very interesting chapter on animal mummification as well as another on the development of human mummification. A must for both the budding and experienced Egyptologist!

HANDY AND USEFUL GUIDE TO FUNERARY ARCHAEOLOGY OF EGYPT 29 Nov 2000
By Robert - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This nice book of Dr. Spencer is a very useful guide to the funerary customs and the general archaeology of ancient Egypt. In a certain sense, it is the perfect replacement for the much out-dated Wallis Budge's "The Mummy", so that this title comes to fill a gap: a handy, up-dated and concise treatise on all what you must know about the mortuary realm and the archaeology of the ancient Egytians. A MUST FOR NEWCOMERS!
