Take Hyacinth Bucket (Bouquet), Joyce Grenfell and Emily and Florence from Little Britain - mix them up - and you have the sublime Hinge and Brackett.

Sensible, practical Dr Evadne Hinge and her old school chum, opera star and national treasure, Dame Hilda Brackett are brought to life by the talented George Logan and Patrick Fyfe in 6 witty episodes, co written by Gyles Brandreth.

With more than a nod to Noel Coward, the gentle world of these two maiden ladies is a joy from start to finish as they show us round their home village Stackton Tressel, playing bowls, organising recitals, providing music for weddings, shopping for hats. Their tussles with the local Librarian ("Shhh!") are a recurring joy, as are the phone calls to Town Clerk Teddy and his daring - but accident prone wife - Peggy. The humour is spiced with double meanings - but the U certificate means there is nothing offensive here.

When Hilda and Evadne burst into song, the music genius of their creaters is there to see, yet they are happy to play the dotty ladies with a warmth that shines through and makes them real characters. Many viewers will associate an old auntie, a neighbour, a school teacher they knew with one or other of the "girls".

It has taken too long for the BBC to release this delight so I hope the second series will follow quicker. The opening credits are different every time and the theme tune will have you singing along in no time.

So put on your pearls, pull on your white gloves and amble into the world of Dame Hilda and Dr Evadne - if only to see the latters splendid sit-on motor mower, which only works backwards....

Extras include a lovely 20 minute interview with George Logan on how the ladies came to be.

Unsung comic genius 25 Aug 2007
Hinge and Bracket, probably not everyone's cup of tea. A bit too twee for some, but hidden behind all that lace and light operetta is some wonderful, slightly naughty, British comedy, poking gentle fun at the English middle classes.
To watch episodes of "Dear Ladies" is to enter into the fictional English village of Stackton Tressel and be invited into the picturesque home of two of the leading lights of the community Dr.Evadne Hinge and Dame Hilda Bracket.
Nothing ever much happens, they drink tea, chat on the phone to their friend Teddy, go to the library (SSSSHHH!!), gossip, gently bicker with each other, get stuck in the lift in the local department store, have a sherry... it's all very genteel.
Of course the main point behind it all is that H&B are a drag act. But as you may have gathered, not in a Lily Savage or Dame Edna sort of way. There is nothing malignant or cruel (a little bitchiness maybe) going on here.
The two actors, George Logan as Dr Hinge and Patrick Fyffe as Dame Hilda are FAULTLESS.I love them so much and if I'm ever feeling a bit down and the world feels grey and joyless I'll watch an episode of these two talented eccentrics and suddenly the world seems an OK place to be.
Mr. Fyffe sadly is no longer with us, he died in 2002, but I for one think he was a comic genius and his creation Dame Hilda Bracket was perfect.
Don't expect anything radical or boundary pushing, but if you're of the right mind-set,do expect to be entertained.

A britain that never was is captured here a la Brief Encounter. This time however the charming ladies of Stackton Trestle are all laughs with this great DVD from the Dame and the Doctor. If you remember them, don't waste time thinking, just hit order. If you don't remember them but love classic british comedy you won't go far wrong here. A joy to watch, keep an ear out for those lines as they enter or exit a scene, they are full of double entendre. I laughed out loud all the way through, its going into my top 10.
