Product Description

BBC Review

Loney Dear is the work of one man, multi-instrumentalist Emil Sanangen. Since 2003, he's been quietly releasing albums to a gradually building word-of-mouth fanbase, and with Dear John - his fifth - Emil has made what he considers to be his masterpiece.

Emil's music as Loney Dear operates in the area marked 'lovely'. As is mostly the case with his fellow Swedish acts, he shares a sweet melancholy that you can cuddle up to. Dear John is the fifth and final part of his odyssey so far - it's billed as both a love letter to himself and a goodbye note to his loved ones - with delicate thoughts and gestures throughout. Those concerned for Emil's state of mind should relax however, as it doesn't spell the end for Loney Dear, just the 'first phase'.

Dear John sees Emil singing of life, and why it's worth living. Offering 11 doses of ever-evolving magic pitched somewhere around the worlds of Flaming Lips and Brian Wilson - an area that's been reasonably well ploughed over of late - Emil manages to find fresh new magic with which to melodically beguile.

It's fairly perfect throughout with the gentle shuffling urgency of Everything Turns To You, the soft focus dramatics of I Got Lost and the perfect haze of Summers. Under A Silent Sea calvacades into a light rave crescendo that could be mixed up and have shapes thrown at it, while the album closer and title track emits a slow dazzle of martial drums and brass giving you a pleasing send off into the night.

Dear John is Loney Dear's moment. It's the sound of an artist starting to fly. It's also an invitation to you to discover what came before, and a chance to envelope yourself and investigate a whole new world of a new favourite artist. --Ian Wade

By Don Panik TOP 500 REVIEWER

The delights of this album passed me by a bit when I first heard it on release, suggesting the possibility that it can pass pleasantly by as background without making a very strong impression. Having now listened a few times with the volume up and a bit more concentration, this CD reveals itself (to me at least) as a bit of a masterpiece. Having scanned a few reviews it is clear that opinion is divided - those who revered his previous work often feeling disappointed. I am not familiar with previous offerings (but intend to do something about that) - so judging this purely on it's own merits, I think that this is a brilliant bit of emotional pop. The layering of samples, synths, guitars and goodness knows what (well whistling actually) combined with his rather thin and high singing will not be to everyone's taste, but if you are far too cool to like Abba, but appreciate the Swedish take on pop music (a la The Cardigans, Peter, Bjorn and John and Jens Lekman) this could be a worthy addition to your collection / playlist.

The thing that draws me in is the brilliant melodies, the elaborate builds to sad euphoria: tunes that stick in your head, with enough going on to keep you interested for more than a few listens. Emil Svanängen used to be a one man band toiling away on his lap top but now brings to mind bands such as Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips, also Passion Pit and the more dance orientated indie synth pop of MGMT. The sensibility (rather than the sound) of the record is actually closer to the confessional intimacy of Bon Iver and Iron and Wine. The cleverness and complexity (and the whistling!) puts me in mind of Andrew Bird.

Not sure what level of awareness there is of Loney, Dear, so if this is new to you definitely listen to some of the samples - but listen hard and ideally a few times. If you like any of the bands mentioned above recommend that you check this out.

I came across this album on itunes! downloaded one track and was hooked on it so bought the CD. This is an imaginative one with clever indie/pop songs tinged with more serious mellow songs. The sound is reminds me of The Dears but a little more melodic. I have played this 3 times and each time the songs become even more powerful! There are dark undertones which add texture to the average indie albums. This is an experience so i recommend you give it a try!
