Product Description

'I suppose it was conceited of me. But it was fun. And I felt like getting a bit of my own back on some of the people who'd conned and flattered me into wasting all those years.'

In this wry, piercing short story from one of the greatest of all British postwar writers, an ageing poet considers the value of his art - and of the critics who've found genius in it. Then, with his final work, he exercises a unique revenge . . .

About the Author

Kingsley Amis's (1922-95) works take a humorous yet highly critical look at British society, especially in the period following the end of World War II. Born in London, Amis explored his disillusionment in novels such as That Uncertain Feeling (1955). His other works include The Green Man (1970), Stanley and the Women (1984), and The Old Devils (1986), which won the Booker Prize. Amis also wrote poetry, criticism, and short stories.

Dear Illusion 6 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
Dear Illusion centres on an aging English poet, Ted Potter, and his dissatisfaction with the English literary clique, who lavish praise which Potter does not believe he deserves.

Potter is an excellent character creation. He's spontaneous, witty and something of a conundrum. It is a shame he has not featured in more titles. He's certainly as interesting as the far more illustrious other Potter of fiction.

Kingsley Amis' command of dialogue is excellent as usual, and his writing is easy to read and digest. My only gripe is the slightly slow pace at first, and the blandness of the narrating character, the journalist, Sue. Luckily the star attraction of the previously mentioned Potter more than makes up for this. Well done Penguin for having the guts to give short fiction the place it deserves with this excellent affordable little collection.

Four stars, I would recommend if you enjoy this, "Lucky Jim". Kingsley Amis' best work and for me, one of the best British novels of the last sixty years or so.
