Book Description

26 Nov 2009
This book is a fascinating, eye-opening, heartfelt letter which goes behind the scenes, through the ages, in the sorting room and out on the daily round, to tell the other side of the story. At a recent staff meeting, a postman asked what the modernisation of the Royal Mail would mean for "Granny Smith" - the little old lady who lives alone and for whom the mail service is a lifeline. "Granny Smith isn't important," was the reply. "Granny Smith doesn't matter anymore." Well, Dear Granny Smith is an attempt to explain why she does matter. An appeal to all of us to spend an evening by the fire with a cup of cocoa and take a quiet moment to read a letter from the people who are the real Santas, not just at Christmas but all year round -

5.0 out of 5 stars The Royal Mail I never knew! 15 Dec 2009
By G. Sams
Format:Paperback
I will never forget my dear mother's lifelong loyalty to Copydex glue, a bond cemented by the Royal Mail in 1953, when she posted a letter to the company in the morning and returned home in the afternoon to find the Copydex man at her door with a solvent to remove it from her carpet.

Roy Mayall reminds us just what a wonderful natural treasure we have in the Royal Mail, telling it from the inside out, drawing upon a life living through the changes. Now this institution is under threat, facing modernization whilst dealing with the daunting competition of the Internet. Do we really know what we could be losing?

We think in terms of efficiency, time, handling damage and such mechanical things. Roy Mayall takes us inside the mind of the "postie" and we understand, for once, the people and the pride that made our Royal Mail the envy of the world - while giving us the incentive to keep it alive.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has not moved their communications completely into cyberspace; and if you have - well, this is what you're missing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Granny Smith Matters 16 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
This book had me in tears - it paints such a strong picture of what human life is all about and how far from human business is. Roy Mayall's distinctive voice is heartwarming and endearing while presenting a chilling account of just what we will loose if the Royal Mail, as we know it now, is plundered by bosses obsessed by false economies.
