4.0 out of 5 stars Very different - very good! 25 Feb 2014
By Mark
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I saw these guys support August Burns Red in Belfast in February 2014 and went home and immediately ordered the album.

What was strange (yet undoubtedly enjoyable) in a live setting made perfect sense on disc, or more specifically, on disc - with headphones. Being As An Ocean are a hardcore band, yet unlike most of the genre their music is almost entirely clean, 'soft' even. In fact, throughout the entire album, the guitars are distorted very infrequently and quite lightly when they actually are distorted. The remainder are clean or just off-clean, creating an ambient sound that focuses on building atmosphere and feeling through beauty, repetition and layering rather than the brutality of most hardcore.

The oft calm guitars are contrasted with the albums hardcore scream vocals. These are more in the vein of Norma Jean, The Chariot or Every Time I Die than the more common Metalcore screams found in August Burns Red, Killswitch Engage or As I Lay Dying for example. The mix of raw vocals over clean layered guitar works brilliantly! This is where headphones work better than a live setting. Live was good but strange, especially at an ABR gig, on CD it works brilliantly, more-so if you have a good pair of over-ear headphones.

As well as screams, there are a number of excellent clean sections as well as some spoken word mixed with half-screams that remind me of the Me Without You style of vocals. The track - "It's Really Not as Complicated as You're Making It Out to Be" - runs at 11:14 and even has a 'guest vocal', in the form of a recorded speech, by Mahatma Ghandi. This is either an album strong point or it's weak point depending on the taste of the listener. I personally enjoy it but could understand if someone else found it a little too preachy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing album from a great band 28 Jan 2014

I respect music for the perfect mindful moments you transcend to. BEING AS AN OCEAN touch every tuneful nerve, their music brings you to a perfect state. They are in my top 5 bands rubbing shoulders with Silverstein, BMTH, Alesana and Rise Against.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CD I've heard in years 24 Dec 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is by far the most amazing CD I have heard in years, if not ever. As soon as I heard, "The Hardest Part...", "Dear G-D" and "This Loneliness..." I bought the album because it was just that good. Their lyrics are the thing that stand out and the entire album is full of raw passion and beautiful clean riffs from start to finish that it put me in a trance state upon hearing it - it was simply that amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best post hardcore band since Alexisonfire 5 Jun 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
What an amazing album!
Extremely melodic guitars, beautifully crafted lyrics, hard hitting drums, tear jerking spoken word sections and brutal screams make Being As An Ocean a truly gifted band!
I highly recommend this album, it will change your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good CD 21 Feb 2013

They have a very unique sound and lyrics that are worth listening to and have a very powerful and very deep message. The guitar is different than other screamo bands, and I enjoy the changeup from the usual chugging guitar.
