Review
'Slider and his creator are real discoveries.' Daily Mail

Product Description
Chattie Cornfeld was murdered while jogging in the park. She ran her own small marketing company and lived comfortably, perhaps too comfortably for her income. At first it looked as though she was the latest victim of the 'Park Killer', but it doesn't take Slider and Atherton long to establish that someone was trying to pass the killing off as part of a pattern: only the pattern doesn't fit, this one was personal. Chattie was popular with all who crossed her path, and it was difficult to imagine she had gained any enemies. Turning to the two most popular motives for murder - money and passion - Slider and his team's investigation turn up some puzzling anomalies in her life, not least the number of men who counted themselves as her lover and the tangled relationships of her family. But none of the suspects can be made to fit what evidence they have, unless of course they've been mis-reading the evidence ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable from start to finish, 26 Jun 2006
By Helen Simpson (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I wasn't sure I'd be able to read this, 'my first Slider mystery' without having read the previous books but was really glad I did. It was an engaging novel from the start, simple but intriguing. I liked the way the author uses the characters to comment on things the (British) reader has often wondered, such as whether the British police department IS just like it's portrayed on the telly in 'The Bill', and the Cockney rhyming slang thrown in such as 'syrup' (syrup of figs = wig). If you're looking for a book that typifies both everyday life and criminal investigation in England then this is it.

I have to say that I did guess 'whodunnit' about half way through but that didn't make it any less enjoyable because I wasn't 100% sure plus didn't know the motive.
All the characters were very believable and even recognisable, Harrod-Eagles certainly is an excellent observer of people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dear Departed - Whodunnit and humour - a pleasant potion, 3 Feb 2007
By Russell Telfer - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles has shown herself to be the mistress of current humorous detective fiction.

Using the loose structure of a police procedural, she adds likeable well-differentiated police characters including a super whose appearance, mannerisms and vocabulary explore a rich comic vein.

The main character, DI Bill Slider, is realistic and humane and has his own family concerns which occasionally conflict with the job.

A young woman has been murdered in a London park. Is it the work of a serial killer or a specific targeted crime, and if so, how had the victim (a good person for once) attracted such a fate?

There is steady movement towards uncovering the true situation and you might well feel that all of this could really have happened - (not a certainty in this kind of fiction). Slider and his DS Atherton take some unorthodox steps to land the perpetrator and you will probably be kept guessing until the end.

As a bonus, the humour might make you laugh out loud. My only criticism? This is not the first book she has started with a murder in a park, and I nearly missed it because I thought I had read it before!
