Product Description

Product Description

Many in the course of their jobs have to deal with irate, rude, impatient, emotional, persistent and aggressive people. Those who are skilled in dealing with such situations are in great demand, and the aim of this book is to teach the techniques which will improve the reader's communication skills and help to control anger and stress. The author, who lectures on the subject in the United States, looks at human behaviour patterns and offers advice towards developing the ability to deal effectively with difficult people, be they clients, supervisors, colleagues or subordinates.

When I initially picked up this book, I bought it on the strengh of the subjects it covers. In brief these are: Dealing with manipulators, Dealing with difficult clients, supervisors,co-workers,and subordinates. It can be seen that it emphasises workplace tensions. When you consider that we often work with people we may never normally choose to, and the amount of time spent with them, not to mention the normal stresses of working life, it is a good area to examine how we can deal with difficult people, especially when things reach the point you have to leave a job as a result, as happened to me.
The book has a habit of breaking down every type of behaviour into categories, or labels, which is handy for tracking down the label for your difficult person, but then you only find a paragraph of text specific to that type. People are of course, more complex, so you really need to read the whole book.
I have found the books 'I'm OK, You're OK' by Thomas Harris, and Games People Play' by Eric Berne, both on Transactional Analysis, useful here, although not so popular today.

I bought this years and years ago to help me deal with a challenging co-worker . . and it worked! I believe a new version has now come out, but I still refer to this one and use it as a reference guide for training.
