3.0 out of 5 stars City boy tries to rescue firm and win girl's heart, 31 May 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dealers [DVD] [1988] (DVD)
If you ARE a dealer, you'll enjoy this empty-headed piece of late-eighties kitsch. If you're NOT a dealer you might find that it's not worth the bother. The opening scene is a T-Bond trader blowing his brains out in the bank's boardroom over a bad position, while the Gilt trader is flying to work in his seaplane, prior to mooring it off Tower Bridge. This lets you have a fair guess as to just how believable the rest of the film will be. It's a simple "will he won't he" tale of a thrusting young pro trying to trade his way out of a bad position, counterpointed with a simple "will he won't he" boy-meets-girl plot, with a lot of City fatuousness thrown into the mix.

If you know London, you'll enjoy the convoluted route that Daniel takes from Bank underground station to the Bank of England (which includes a cab ride) before ending up at Mansion House!

4.0 out of 5 stars Exaggerated but fell good version of the market trading game, 25 May 2004
This review is from: Dealers [DVD] [1988] (DVD)
For a former trader like myself, this is a feel good movie. This is pretty much believable but it is exaggerated by about 50%. I don't ever heard about a trader flying in a seaplane to work at 10am every morning when the actual markets open at 7am! This story is about a trader trying to beat the market by putting his career on the line when he takes the biggest gamble on the markets ever ahead of a BoE interest rate announcement. This sort of practice practically stopped when the Nick Leeson case exploded. This also has a boy-meets-gorgeous-girl story, which stars Rebecca De Mornay, which is kind of true as most of the lady traders were definitely gorgeous and mostly blonds as well. If you enjoy a story of a trader taking a very big bet and beating the stock market & everbody that doubted and put you down from the start, including snatching the bosses' mistress under his nose and getting him sack in the course of it, then this is the movie for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Capital City !, 18 Oct 2006

I just wanted to remark on the similarity to the TV series "Capital City", the dealer room appears to be same location and the computers are the same vintage. The bosses are the same heartless snarling types. I half-expected Max or Declan to show up and say "Shane Dealers", and then Declan DOES show up !!

So if you like "Capital City" and want more of the same, this movie is for you. Expect a little more sex and violence, and the transfer quality is superior to the quality of the DVD release of "Capital City."
