This is again a graceful, compelling, intelligent story written by the incomparable Liz Carlyle.

Unlike many other historical romance novels, the various characters are finely drawn, be it by their actions or by a few well-chosen words. They are given substance by the author's skill.

The main focus, as usual, is on the relationship between the h/h, Aubrey and Walrafen.
I'll not get into the story since a synopsis is already posted above, suffice it to say the actions of the characters are based on their emotional state and the past that still haunts them.
Aubrey obviously has something to hide, but will not trust anyone out of fear. Walrafen finds he can not trust Aubrey, but in spite of her reticence and his suspicions he is drawn to her as he's never been to anyone else.
Theirs is a very complicated relationship and Liz Carlyle writes it with flair.

As always, this is an intelligent, finely crafted, sexy and romantic read.

It isn't necessary, but you may want to read A woman of virtue and perhaps No true gentleman first as some of the characters from these books make an appearance.

This is by far my favourite historical romance book to date. In addition to Liz's usually deep and nuanced characters, plausible story, hot love scenes and exciting mystery there is more humour here than in her other books and most historical romances. I found myself laughing out loud at a few places throughout the book especially at Kemble and DeRohan's conversations during their trip north. I have read this book at least five times. All in all a can't-put-down-to-go-to-sleep book.

Thought i'd give this author a go as my fave authors Connie Mason, Heather Graham aka Shannon Drake can't write as fast as i can read their books. So upon reading reviews of this title on USA site (only 1 review here) thought i'd give it a a go and i'm rather disappointed, towards the end of the book the story picks up a bit, going to try devil to pay and if i don't enjoy that going to give up on this author.
