Product Description

An 18th century castle full of mystery and dark secrets is the setting for murder and forbidden romance in this captivating Gothic historical romance novel by Sophia Queen.

What would you do to escape an arranged marriage to a ruthless lord? Karina Rouelle must flee her uncle's home in the night and hide her true identity from society by becoming an undercover spy with an elite, all-female investigative agency. Her first assignment, posing as a governess at Westford castle in order to investigate the suspicious death of the Countess of Westford, quickly becomes complicated when she finds herself attracted to her number one suspect--the dark and mysterious Lord Sebastien Blackwell.

Sebastien Blackwell is a survivor. After his father's bankruptcy, he becomes a self-made man in Victorian England's booming industrial era. Trapped into a loveless marriage, he has survived the shock of his wife's sudden death. But now he must survive rumors and outright accusations that his wife died by his own hands, and that he is indeed the "cursed, dark lord" of Westford castle. Hiring a private agency to investigate the crime and prove his innocence seems like a good idea...until his desire threatens to compromise the case and Karina's life.

A Deadly Waltz delivers romance and spine-tingling suspense in a Gothic historical setting reminiscent of Victoria Holt's style and Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.

Categories: historical Gothic romantic suspense, Victorian mysteries England, Victorian murder mystery, Gothic mystery, historical Victorian mystery, Victorian romantic suspense, English castles, new adult romantic suspense, women sleuths.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't read period romances . . . well, I didn't. But now I will! 4 Feb 2014

I just don't read period or historical romances. Never have, and thought I never would. Sophia Queen's A Deadly Waltz changed all that.

As a reader, I didn't know what to expect. I was afraid there'd be lots of "thees" and "thous" and I'd get worn out trying to tolerate the Victorian vernacular. Didn't happen. Ms. Queen's characters are warm and down to earth. Karina was smart. personable, and torn in her feelings, and Sebastien was a dark and conflicted heartthrob. There were a couple of other characters I loved to hate, but in the case of at least one, I couldn't figure out why I hated that particular character. No spoiler here, but I found out in due time why this one character elicited such hatred from me - it was well-placed. I wondered right up to the end what was going to happen, and I wasn't disappointed by my surprise.

As a writer, I was pleased with the plot. It had just enough twists and turns to keep me interested without being too confusing. The tension, sexual and otherwise, between the characters was just right. The language was easy to follow with just enough of the nuances of the period to keep me in that timeframe. I was happy with the pacing, the descriptions, and the detail to the characters. What few typos I found were less than the norm and in no way affected my reading. And I noticed NO misspellings and NO incorrectly conjugated verbs. Very well written.

So did I like it? There was a hint at a follow-up volume. I hope Ms. Queen's working on that now. I'll be watching for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Can't Be Beat!! 31 Dec 2013

Sophia Queen’s A Deadly Waltz could be summed up with one word: Wow! But that just wouldn’t do. As a historical romance, it can’t be beat. As a suspenseful murder mystery, I couldn’t get enough and was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out the guilty party all along, and the end came as a surprise and left me wanting more. Ms. Queen wove in the romance, the suspense, the fear, and the backstory intricately, while holding out and letting the reader in on a piece at a time. I recommend this story of Karina and Sabastien to anyone who enjoys historical romance, or any form of romance. It is a great read and heartwarming the whole way through. Karina is charming, smart and brave, and Sabastian is delightfully heroic and a bit dark, in such a sweet way. Ms. Queen puts the reader right in the middle of things, making us feel, see, and hear all the sights and sounds her characters endure in early England among the wealthy class and all their secrets and desires. Even her secondary characters are well thought out and draw the reader into their world of discretion and deceit. I can’t wait for the next book Ms. Queen offers up us. I suggest you order your copy now.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! Took seconds to fall in love with it! 6 Mar 2014

I am usually a hard reader to please, especially in the romance department. It just happened by fate that I stumbled onto this fantastic read. I thought the character development was great, story kept a perfect pace, the dialogue felt real, and the love story really made me feel as though I was in the story as well. You will fall in love with Sebastien’s luring personality and find truths in yourself through Karina. You do not need to be in love with historical romance to enjoy this book. I really hope that Sophia Queen does not stop here; I cannot wait until she comes out with another novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Infatuated, because love is not a strong enough word that I feel for this book! 6 Mar 2014

This is one of my new favorites! I cannot believe how I have lived before reading this romance novel. I was hooked from the beginning and I just couldn't put it down. I recommended this to everyone at work. I never write reviews, but I couldn't contain my enthusiasm for this hidden gem. I read it and loved it, then I re-read it and fell in love all over again. The only disappointment is having to put the novel down and do silly things like go to work or sleep. I don’t care who you are, this is a must read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Would have given five stars IF........ 25 May 2014

I love to read historical books from Regency AND Victorian England....and I even more so love it when either genre is combined with mystery and romance. I'm a Jane Eyre fan, as well as all things gothic. This book would have been five stars if the author had stayed true to the cadence of speech from the Victorian era. At the beginning of the book it seemed as if she was going to do just that. Then as the story spun faster and faster, the speech became more modern and many times simply sounded too American. HOWEVER, I give the author great credit in that she spun a wonderful tale and the book kept me awake one entire night. It was fast paced and I couldn't put it down. About five paragraphs in, I THOUGHT I had figured out the villian in said picture! Then about three fourths through the book I glimpsed who I believed to be the villian....then the author twisted me around a few times, making me doubt myself. But at the end, the villian became clear! All in all, this book is a fun, light read and I think most will enjoy it.
