This is a very entertaining British crime novel. (This is the first I have read in the Detective sergeant Mackinnon series). DS Mackinnon is on the case. The book uses the : "a woman has disappeared opening", like an opening in chess the missing woman opening is quite common... so I was a bit concerned at first.

The prologue tells us that this disappearance is an abduction . The elements are, Anya, our missing woman is Polish and is in working in London. The second key element is she is obsessed with fame, the third element is Anya's obsession makes her especially attractive to this particular serial killer.. Fame is both the bait and the name of the demon that feeds all delusions in this book. Many serial killers seek fame..? Anya seeks fame and even the cops that detect crime and bring the evil doers to justice seek fame.. The story is a swirling tornado of delusion and obsession. With a dark theatrical twist.

Anya is a foreigner and we realise this makes her vulnerable. Her brother Henryk understands why this is so when he attempts to report his sister missing at a London police station. The anxiety and the distress build as the POV shifts from the killer, to the brother, to the police, despite the complex POV, I found the book very easy to read.

The statistics are chilling.. there could be a 1000 serial killers at work at any one time in the UK and America add to that thousands of prostitution gangs all are abducting young girls and attractive women or inveigling young girls in one way or another day in day out. With this in mind read on...

Over the years there have been literally hundreds of cases of missing women. Many are never seen again.. cell phones go dead, their bank accounts go stone cold.

This book really was a fab read, from the first to the last page. The characters were great, the plot kept you guessing, and the book is very well written.

This is the second DS Jack Machinnon book I have read by D.S. Butler, and I look forward to many more - well done

4.0 out of 5 stars I shall read some of the others 11 April 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It is a crime thriller. There is very little mystery to it but it makes for good easy reading
Recommend this book for those people who are not too bothered about a mystery However it does have a little twist at the end.
Similar to the Tim ellis type of story but this author easier on the adrenalin rushes

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced easy read 1 Nov. 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I spotted this on kindle for free and thought I would give it a try as I am a fan of detective stories and always on the look out for ones that I havent read and better still when there is a series. I was hooked from the first couple of pages and finished the book in a day, that would be my only slight complaint, it was too short but as it was free I cant really complain that much. I have now purchased the next two books in the series and hope that the writing will be as good, the characters of Mackinnon and Collins grew on me during Deadly Obsessions and I look forward to their development in the coming books. Well done on this first effort Ms Butler albeit it was released on kindle after the later books.

    3.0 out of 5 stars OK 29 Oct. 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition
Ok read, but I guessed 'who'd done it' quite early on. I don't want to give too much away, but the plot could have done with more investigative work by the two officers investigating and with believable characters and scenarios.

4.0 out of 5 stars good prequel 9 April 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a prequel to a series I haven't yet read. It is a shortish story but seems to nicely develop the characters of DS Jack MacKinnon and DC Nick Collins. The story itself centres on the disappearance of Anya Blonski who is a student at the Star academy, which is owned by the frosty Cleeves family. Upon closer inspection Collins and MacKinnon discover she isn't the first student from the academy to disappear without trace. This story does lack some depth but I think this is due to the fact that it is mainly serving as an introduction to the characters and I hope future books will have more complex storylines as it was fairly obvious which direction the plot was taking. It was an enjoyable read and I will be looking for the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Didn't want to put it down! 13 Mar. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had never read any D.S. Butler books until this one and having seen the cheap Kindle price I decided to give it a try since my main genre of reading is British police/mystery. The story kept me gripped from the first page and I didn't want to put it down, finishing the book in two long sessions, broken only by a compulsory break to work LOL

It is an engrossing read, the plot draws you in and keeps you guessing, the characters are well drawn and the whole thing is well paced, never flags and doesn't bring in a lot of side issues as "padding" ... in short an excellent read, I will certainly be buying the rest of the series.
