Book Description

5 July 2012
Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered. Since then, Mac's life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac's hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy's Killer: A white werewolf. Lupine Syndrome -- the werewolf virus - is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control and the Trackers are determined to stop those with Lupine Syndrome, at any cost. Unwilling to work with the brutal Trackers, but desperately wanting to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy's murder herself. But the deeper she delves into the mystery behind Amy's death, the more secrets she discovers lurking in the shadows of Hemlock. Secrets that should have been left untold. Secrets that will change her life forever.

About the Author

Kathleen spent most of her teen years crushing on authors and writing really bad short stories about vampires (this isn't false modesty-the stories were pretty awful). She put her writing dreams on hold while attending college, but tripped over them when office life started leaving her with an aversion to blazers and an allergy to cubicles. HEMLOCK is her first novel and the start of a series following Mackenzie Dobson, a girl living in a world under threat from a virus that turns people into werewolves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deadly Hemlock 22 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
Having read a lot of vampire books lately, I was looking forward to a change of pace and `Deadly Hemlock' provided exactly that with a thrilling story about a society in which werewolves effectively live out in the open after the spread of lupine syndrome. Taking place in the small town of Hemlock, Kathleen Peacock has written a fast-paced and edge of your seat story which had me gripped from the word go.

I have to start by saying that this book has one of the best love triangles that I've come across in recent months. The main character Mackenzie, literally has two incredibly hot guys in love with her. What's a girl to do?! Personally, I was torn between them too. Firstly there's Kyle who has been Mackenzie's closest friend since they were children and who is sweet and reliable. It was quite obvious from the start that although she kept professing that they were only friends, there was a lot more than that between them. Then there is Jason, who was her best friend Amy's boyfriend, but who she feels an undeniable attraction to. Usually I'll pick one guy or the other but in this case I loved them both and I enjoyed seeing her interactions with both characters. It will be very interesting to see how the love triangle develops between them.

There is of course much more to this book though than just romance. At the centre of the plot lies Mackenzie's determination to find out what really happened to her friend Amy who was murdered by a werewolf. As she begins to investigate her friend's death, she discovers a number of shocking secrets about the people she thought she knew. Multiple twists and turns meant that I was continually left guessing about who could be trusted and found it impossible to put the book down until I'd read just one more chapter.

4.0 out of 5 stars A whodunnit YA 12 Aug 2012

I listened to this on audible and well the story line pulled me in and I can definitely say I am no young adult, I enjoyed the roller-coaster ride, the lopsided love triangle and I especially enjoyed the protagonist and the twisted manipulative plot that he had woven. It's well narrated and will definately looking forward to the next book. Escapism with dark undertones, my only whinge was that I found Mac sometimes a little whiney, but this was is only a small gripe. A keeper..

What made this novel so entertaining? Well it had mystery and suspense. My favourite books are always the ones that do not tell me everything at the beginning and therefore keep me guessing. The downside to the mystery, it is very hard to talk about anything in a non-spoiler review.

"It was our fault Amy was dead. All of our faults. The best friend who had bailed; the boyfriend who had been running late; the guy who hadn't answered his phone. Six days ago, a werewolf had killed Amy and we were each to blame."

There were so many unanswered questions. I felt sorry for Mac most of the time. There was so much being kept from her, and I wanted to know it all. Who is Amy's murderer? It was not as simple as originally seen. It was a case of everyone seems to know something that the main character doesn't. I'm surprised Mac doesn't come out of this not trusting anybody. It was played just right. Feed me snippets of information to keep me interested but not too much so that I lose interest.

This is a very unique take on werewolves. But I can't say what it is. We are not told all about it all at once. I would not want to spoil you in a review. The Lupine Syndrome is what drew me in. What exactly does it entail? What made it more interesting was the fact that none of the main characters seemed to be aware what it entails either. All the facts seem a little hazy; is being a werewolf a bad thing?

Jason was a mystery throughout the entirety of the book. Things were happening to him but you were never sure what really was going on behind the scenes. He also made so many mistakes. I wouldn't be too surprised if most people think he is a bit of a prick, and to be honest he was. But I didn't hate him. In fact I felt sorry for him. He gets my sympathy vote.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deadly Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock 29 July 2012
Format:Paperback
Werewolves have never been a particular favourite of mine. I was always Team Edward, I didn't get into the Mercy Falls series and generally the word werewolf would put me off. Kathleen Peacock's debut novel, however, captured my attention from the first moment I heard about it.

Deadly Hemlock is not your average werewolf book. Known simply as Hemlock to the rest of the world, we enter a world where lupine syndrome is running wild, and a simple scratch can infect you with the disease. Mac Dobson is mourning the death of her best friend, who was mauled by a werewolf that's terrorizing the town. With the arrival of the Trackers, a group who have taken the responsibility of hunting werewolves on themselves, Mac finds herself tracking down the wolf herself, and uncovering secrets along the way.

Firstly, just a quick one on the cover. I don't usually comment on whether or not I like the cover of a book on my reviews, because I don't think it should hold any weight on whether or not you buy a book, but I love this edition. Sure, I have no idea why it's called Deadly Hemlock instead of just Hemlock, but I LOVE THIS COVER. Can you see the wolf in the trees? I only just spotted it. AMAZING.

I really can't express how much I enjoyed this. It was a perfect read - enough of everything. There's action, romance, the supernatural element, with mystery and wonderful characters. What sets this book apart from the rest is that it's not just a typical werewolf read. We are thrown right into an alternate world where lupine syndrome is rife, which makes the reader automatically think that the idea of wolves is okay. There's no if, buts or maybes - the scene is set, and you just accept it straight away. And while romance is a part of the novel, it's not the centre of the plot.
